Job Opportunity: Global Health Communications Manager

Attention superstar communicators and global health enthusiasts! We're hiring a Global Health Communications Manager to lead amplification, promotion, and publicity for the diverse global health activities happening across all seven schools at Stanford University. The Manager will be positioned within Center of Innovation in Global Health, serving as the resident expert for global health communications, digital marketing strategies, and narrative storytelling within Stanford Medicine. Using graphic and web design, strong digital marketing skills, writing and editing expertise, the Manager will shine a spotlight on all global health research and programs at Stanford while leading creation and execution of a strategic communications plan for Stanford Global Health.

The Center:
Stanford's Center for Innovation in Global Health is committed to increasing wellbeing, world-wide. With nearly 200 faculty fellows from all seven schools within the university, we share knowledge, equip leaders and build interdisciplinary teams to address urgent global health challenges and achieve health equity. We focus our research and educational programs in three main areas - 21st century leadership, human and planetary health, and global health equity - and we partner with local organizations around the world to ensure that Stanford's commitment to excellence extends well beyond our campus.

The Opportunity:
We are seeking a dynamic, experienced communications professional to lead strategic communications for the Center. Primary responsibilities include writing and content development, branding, and marketing, outreach and advocacy, strategic planning, and program management.

Duties:

Writing and Content Development
  • Develop and publish original news stories and multimedia content, to be posted on the Center's website, Stanford School of Medicine and University's multiple print and online platforms, and external media sources.
  • Develop, manage, and cultivate a balanced content calendar that takes into account original content, social media, and internally and externally earned media that accurately reflects the depth and diversity of global health activities across all of Stanford's seven schools.
  • Manage and produce the Center's monthly newsletter, Global Health Spotlight (approximately 4,300 readers).
  • Contribute original content and earned media to monthly Bay Area Global Health Alliance newsletter.
  • Direct the Center's social media presence, including management and direction for the Center's social media and Digital Outreach Assistant. The Center is currently active on Twitter (approximately 5,300 followers).
  • Manage the design and production of event promotional materials for email and social media distribution.
  • Maintain and develop the Center's website, advising on and managing all redesigns and maintaining news items, event calendar, program updates, announcements.
  • Support Center Directors in preparing remarks for speaking engagements and media opportunities.

Outreach and Advocacy
  • Work closely with Stanford University communications, School of Medicine's Office of Communications and Public Affairs, and other University partner communications teams to promote global health activities and to disseminate content.
  • Increase external visibility of Stanford Global Health activities.
  • Increase visibility of Stanford Global Health across campus, attracting interest and engagement from undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Act as external liaison to global health advocacy and communications partners e.g. news organizations, foundations, NGOs, private sector.
  • Contribute to planning, execution, and promotion of Center-sponsored events, including symposia, seminar series, appearances with VIP guests, and other events.

Strategic planning
  • Develop and implement long-term and short-term plan for Stanford Global Health communications.
  • Track global health trends, opportunities, and priorities. Make strategic decisions regarding key messages, topics to feature, Stanford Faculty to promote, and activities for Center Leadership to engage in.

Program Management
  • Manage all aspects of communications function, creating work-flow protocols and systems that streamline content production, placement, asset management, audience engagement, and publicity.
  • Serve as program lead for the Stanford Global Health Media Fellowship, a one-year fellowship that trains a medical student or junior physician in journalism and communications skills.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of global health field.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and a proven eye for print and digital design.
  • Superb organizational skills and attention to detail. Commitment to high-quality products.
  • Strong copy writing and editing skills.
  • Experience with editorial writing, including interviewing and narrative storytelling.
  • Experience with software for social media, graphic design, WordPress, and Mailchimp.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including Faculty, students, administrators, communicators, and global partners.
  • Ability to learn quickly, take initiative, and assume ownership of projects.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions and engaging senior leadership.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work as part of a small and energetic team.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience in journalism, reporting, and/or multimedia production is a plus.

Duties include:
  • Provide public relations support for audiences that are both internal and external to the university.
  • Plan and execute activities to support public relations objectives.
  • Develop, execute and oversee written communications of moderate complexity, including presentations, speeches, news stories, web content, talking points, and correspondence and social media posts.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external partners
  • Participate in regular meetings of key researchers with media relations needs to develop strategies and tactics for facilitating effective communications.
  • Identify and maintain professional relationships with key press, policy influencers and community leaders.
  • Prepare content for internal or external newsletters. Understand email and digital content distribution.
  • Assist in developing strategies for brand managements, reputation management and issues management of moderate complexity.
  • Assist with the design and implementation of effective constituent communications programs and social media strategies.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Expertise in global health and specifically the global health advocacy and communications space, including strategic partners (e.g. Health UN Agencies, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), and massive campaigns (e.g. Sustainable Development Goals, Universal Health Coverage goals).

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
  • Excellent written communication skills, reporting skills, and advanced skills in conceptual editing, copy editing, and proof reading.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal communications groups across campus.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working with a variety of people.
  • Capacity to write and synthesize materials and communicate information in a manner easily understood.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, speaking.
  • Occasionally grasp forcefully, writingby hand.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork.
