Finance Associates operate as emerging professionals in finance. They may be responsible for a variety of professional level work across various financial disciplines, such as accounting, budget, payroll, financial aid, financial analysis, purchasing, or treasury. Through professional development and work opportunities, they may concentrate on building a more targeted skill set in one particular financial specialty. Finance Associates demonstrate a strong capacity to work independently as they carry out their duties on behalf of a program, function, or department. Finance Associates operate in collaboration with more experienced professionals, who mentor and support their development.

The Department of Environmental Sciences in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences seek a team member in our administrative office for the position of “Finance Associate – Grants”.This individual must embrace and practice departmental values of environmentalism, diversity, honesty, and teamwork.This position provides direct post-award spending support to department PIs by verifying conformity of individual purchases with grant approved budgets and compliance with university and federal sponsored programs policies and procedures. Applicant should be experienced in the processing of stipend payments, subcontracts and sub-awards, travel, expenditure reimbursements in addition to procurement of goods, services, and equipment. This position provides back up to and is cross trained with the Department Fiscal Technician Senior for non-grant awards.Applicant must embrace and exhibit a positive and friendly professional demeanor. Work is primarily independent, and goals are set in coordination with a supervisor. Interim telework applies until Summer 2021, after which time in-office work and/or telework may be required. Candidate must possess a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive work environment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor’s Degree. 4 years of experience (in lieu of education) in an academic fiscal post-award grant position preferred.

Experience: Two years of experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in a fast-paced office environment that requires quick thinking, and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experienced in sponsored programs procurement and reconciliation.
  • Experienced to ascertain grant budget line items and apply to individual PI purchases.
  • Experienced in excel and word Microsoft applications. Ability to export data from university systems into excel or word and manipulate for internal reporting.
  • Knowledge of procurement, accounts payable, expenses, and credit card programs in a university setting strongly preferred.
  • Ability to build relationships, develop internal and external partnerships, and influence change.
  • Preference is given to candidates with Research UVA, UBI and Oracle platform experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
