Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the CWC Director, the Associate Director for Rape Crisis and Counseling Services is responsible for the development, administration, evaluation and continuous quality improvement of trauma informed comprehensive general counseling and rape crisis services for the University and Hampshire County area. Primary services include: 24-hour rape crisis hotline, legal and medical advocacy, counseling, and support groups for victims/survivors of rape battering and sexual assault and general counseling. The Associate Director participates on the management team providing leadership for the daily operations of and long-term success of the Center for Women & Community and has primary responsibility for grant development and fiscal accountability.

Essential Functions

  • Develop, plan, direct, oversee and assess counseling and rape crisis programs and services, providing crisis response and management, serving the diverse community including people of all genders throughout UMass Amherst, the Five Colleges and Hampshire County. Oversees compliance with regulations, standards and protocols including those regarding privileged communication between rape crisis counselors and victims, mandated reporting of child and elder abuse, and Criminal Record (CORI) Checks. Represents CWC in absence of Director.
  • Selects, trains and supervises professional staff. Oversees all interns, volunteers and student staff. Researches and develops grant and contract proposals to support rape crisis services and center programming. Ensures compliance with terms and conditions of multiple grants and contracts, including training and reporting requirements. Manages grant and contract funded budgets. Ensures attendance at mandated provider meetings and trainings.
  • Provide leadership to build positive and inclusive communities to achieve the mission, vision and values of the organization in collaboration with a broad range of campus and community partners. Implements outreach strategies and effective partnerships with campus and community groups to promote program collaboration. Acts as liaison to Jane Doe, Inc. Participates on relevant University, Five College, community and state councils, committees and task forces.
  • Influences policies and procedures and negotiates protocols with campus and community agencies and groups dealing with issues of sexual assault response and prevention, including public safety and medical personnel. May be asked to represent University on related issues in response to media inquiries. Oversees related development of internal and external reports.
  • Participates in long and short-range planning, policy development and allocation of resources as a member of CWC's management team.

  • Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

      Master’s Degree in public health, higher education, social work or related field plus five or more years progressive related experience to include administering comparable programs, and experience in rape crisis services and/or violence prevention.
    • Ability to effectively manage and respond to high risk crisis and safety situations.
    • Proven ability to lead critical and strategic planning, organize and manage concurrent priorities and projects including fiscal management, grant-writing, and outreach informed by best practice, federal and state laws, and compliance requirements.
    • Proven ability to lead, coach and develop diverse staff team including the selection, training, supervision and retention of staff. Demonstrated understanding of unique needs related to service provision by a volunteer staff.
    • Contemporary knowledge of theory and best practices related to trauma informed practice and effective strategies relating to supporting both staff providing crisis services and victims/survivors in need of support.
    • Ability to interact professionally, effectively, and collaboratively with broad range of campus and community partners constituencies.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills.
    • Strong proficiency in various contemporary technology platforms including Microsoft Office applications and electronic communications required.
    • Ability and willingness to travel. Some weekend or evening hours required. A valid driver's license and access to car required.
    Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Licensure in Massachusetts for independent practice of clinical social work (LICSW)
  • Experience working in higher education setting.
  • Experience partnering with police, medical and legal professionals, teachers, schools, and other human service providers for comprehensive services.
  • Experience supervising union staff.
