POSITION SUMMARY

As part of MSU Extension (MSUE) and the Health and Nutrition Institute (HNI), this position provides local as well as statewide leadership and educational programming expertise in nutrition and physical activity specifically within tribal nations and communities. Additionally, this position provides leadership to MSU Extension’s Nutrition and Physical Activity (NPA) program and paraprofessional staff in counties within MSU Extension District 2, including Marquette, Alger, Schoolcraft, Luce, Mackinac, and Chippewa counties by providing coaching, training, and providing technical support to staff in their programming efforts. This position will have statewide responsibilities and will collaborate across work teams, Institutes and community groups, working with faculty, specialists and educators for overall advancement of the needs of the Institute clientele.

In this position, you will consult and coordinate with Tribal nations and communities to identify, design, implement and evaluate research-based educational programs that are culturally relevant and resonate with current and projected community driven initiatives related to nutrition and physical activity direct and indirect education, and policy, systems and environmental change activities. Through your leadership, you will foster relationships with Tribal nations and communities across the state to consider and explore the unique needs of Tribal populations related to nutrition education and physical activity and connect to MSU Extension’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) program on collaborative efforts to attain equitable impact for participants.

Additionally, you will ensure the needs and goals of the Health and Nutrition Institute, MSU Extension and grantors are met through the support and management of the programming staff. You will lead efforts related to the recruitment and initial onboarding of new paraprofessional staff and will oversee continuing education and development. You will learn grant compliance requirements, approved curriculum, and policy, system and environmental change strategies to allow you to effectively coach staff in implementing appropriate nutrition and physical activity education to meet the varied needs of the community, Tribal nations and clientele. Through your leadership, you will be responsible for guiding and coaching staff as they implement and evaluate the multiple approaches including direct and indirect education and policy, systems and environmental change efforts within the local community. You will coach, mentor, train and provide technical support to staff in their programming efforts and will ensure the needs and goals of the Health and Nutrition Institute, MSU Extension, and grantors are met through support and management of the programming staff, including observing and evaluating staff to ensure requirements and objectives of the programming and appropriate use of grant funds, are met. In this supervising role, you will be expected to hold your staff accountable to the program requirements and deliverables.

Through your supervising role, you will meet with each staff member individually, at least once per month and will conduct program observations at least two times per year. Additionally, you will be expected to engage with your entire team of programming staff at least once per quarter and you will encourage and provide coaching for internal staff teams to work collaboratively on projects that will advance grant goals.

Through collaboration in research, engagement with community members, and dissemination of research-based information through various methods, including in-person and multimedia programming and written communications, you will support and collaborate with programming staff to explore and implement culturally relevant programs that lead to public knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors that empower Michigan’s limited resource adults, families and youth to gain crucial knowledge about nutrition and healthy foods, increase their daily physical activity, and reduce food insecurity. You will work with staff and community partners to identify and implement policy, systems and environmental change opportunities and provide direct and indirect education when necessary. You will also develop, produce, and deliver culturally relevant nutrition and physical activity educational materials with messaging and content that is accessible and inclusive and is consistent with MSU Extension Health and Nutrition Institute messaging. You will ensure dissemination of research-based curricula and information and serve as an information resource for Extension personnel and clientele.

Your work will include close collaboration with colleagues at MSU and MSU Extension, as well as the diverse network of partner groups to ensure programming with individuals and groups aligns with community driven initiatives and considers unique clientele needs in alignment with funder and/or MSU Extension Institute expectations. You will also meet regularly with other supervising and staff development educators and will actively participate as part of the Nutrition and Physical Activity team.

Although negotiable, there will be space available for this position to work from the Marquette County MSU Extension office.

Characteristic Duties/Responsibilities

Consult and coordinate with Tribal nations and communities to identify, develop, conduct and evaluate culturally relevant and innovative educational programs that meet the current needs of the community, and supports growth and understanding of critical issues facing people in Michigan.

Develop and maintain positive working relationships intra- and inter-organizationally and create and promote positive public relations for MSU Extension and the Health and Nutrition Institute.

Understand and support the Health and Nutrition Institute’s efforts in diversity, equity, inclusion and Civil Rights, with a special emphasis on removing barriers from participation and reaching diverse populations, including but not limited to race, color, national origin, gender, gender identity, religion, age, height, weight, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, marital status, family status or veteran status, socio-economic class and other human differences.

Communicate and interact with community groups to evaluate the needs of the clientele.

In concert with the MSU Extension work team(s), work collaboratively with federal, state and county agencies to identify community driven initiatives and develop effective programming that produces equitable impact for participants.

Serve as an information resource to clientele, partners and Extension staff.

Develop and utilize appropriate media methods to communicate current and timely information, program results, and relevant plan of work updates, as well as a schedule of current and future activities.

Collaborate with MSU Extension staff to gather and report programming outputs and impacts, to demonstrate program effectiveness and to guide future program priorities for MSU Extension, the Health and Nutrition Institute and work teams.

Author, produce and submit regular research-based educational materials and articles.

Actively participate in professional development opportunities.

Other duties or projects as assigned by the Institute Director and Associate Institute Director.

This position is a full-time, fixed term end-dated appointment, renewable annually based upon successful performance and continued funding.

Minimum Requirements

Master’s degree from an accredited institution in a field of study related to community nutrition, human development, family studies, psychology, sociology, public health or related field must be earned by date of hire.

Experience working with Tribal nations and communities.

Demonstrated ability and skill in educational program planning, implementation and evaluation.

Ability to demonstrate sensitivity, knowledge, and use of appropriate approaches, skills and techniques, which reflect an understanding and awareness of social, cultural and economic diversity of the target population served.

Ability to create and carryout a project plan from research of initial concept to project completion and follow-up.

Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

Demonstrated success in program development and delivery to diverse audiences/communities, and proven ability in establishing and working with a diverse network of constituents and community members across race, color, gender, national origin, gender identity, religion, age, height, weight, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, marital status, family status, veteran status, socioeconomic class, and other differences.

Experience and proven ability working productively with a team serving in both leadership and contributor roles.

Experience with marketing/promotion of educational programs.

Understanding of and ability to implement Civil Rights principles and compliance standards.

Proficiency in use of technology (e.g., web research, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook for mail/calendaring, distance technology, etc.) for day-to-day work and educational program delivery, record keeping, reporting, team-based communications and overall management.

Ability to lift and carry educational materials, equipment, etc. up to 25 lbs.

Ability to travel in local and surrounding communities and occasional long-distance travel are required as a regular part of this position.

Desired Qualifications

Experience in community-based program delivery or demonstrated ability and skill in educational program planning, implementation and evaluation (relevant experience acquired within the last 5-years, preferred).

Experience in supervising, coaching, training, and/or mentoring.

Demonstrated drive and initiative, with proven ability to manage multiple responsibilities and tasks simultaneously.

Experience in successful contract and grant writing, including securing and managing grant funds and resources.

1-year demonstrated ability to manage staff remotely.
