Position Highlights:

The University of Arizona’s School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies seeks applicants for the position of Assistant Professor of Practice, Career Track. The position will also hold a secondary title of Assistant Director, Academic of the externally funded Arabic Programs. This is a full-time fiscal (12-month) position. The position will provide academic support and coordination to a variety of externally-funded grants in close collaboration with the Program Director, Prof. Sonia Shiri. The distribution of effort is 60% Teaching and 40% Service/Outreach.

The externally-funded Arabic program offers an intensive and innovative language and cultural curriculum supported by cultural events, clubs, and other interactive activities in preparation for study abroad. The externally-funded Arabic program instructional team includes lecturers, Graduate Teaching instructors, tutors and language partners who serve a number of funded programs to support students learn Arabic language and culture to certain proficiency standards.

The position will be responsible for the day-to-day implementation of rigorous academic grant programming including curricular development and assessment, the coordination of externally funded Arabic program instructors and other instructional staff, and planning and implementation of co-curricular learning activities. The position will also serve as coordinator of the summer externally-funded Arabic program. This is a position that is contingent upon the availability of grant funds and satisfactory performance review.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Duties & Responsibilities

Teaching and Teaching Oversight (60%)

·Teach 2-3 undergraduate courses per year or individualized instruction, depending on program needs

·Manage academic matters pertaining to students in various externally-funded Arabic programs, including:

oPlanning and execution of personalized learning and individualized pathways for Flagship, PGO and Jumpstart students

oEvaluation and admissions for various externally-funded Arabic programs (e.g., Project GO domestic and overseas, Jumpstart, Arabic Flagship)

oEvaluating OPIs and coordination of other proficiency or placement testing

oSupporting academic outreach/recruitment efforts on campus and in high schools

oProvide professional support for the varied members of the instructional teams in adherence to pedagogical grant requirement

·Assist with curriculum and material development and implementation in line with effective and innovative L2 pedagogical approaches

Service/Administration (40%)

·Support the Director with coordinating the implementation of the day-to-day activities of the externally funded Arabic programs by the externally funded Arabic programs academic team in order to meet grant requirements and linguistic and cultural proficiency goals.

·Oversee the academic coordination of the academic year and summer intensive externally- funded Arabic programs

·Articulation within the programs and with high school or overseas partners, dissemination of program best practices to other Flagship and PGO programs; assistance with reporting and proposals for future grants

·Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to assess OPI test scores.
  • Ability to work with a diverse student body
  • Excellent communication skills

Minimum Qualifications:

·Master's degree in Arabic Linguistics, Applied Linguistics or related fields

·Successful record in teaching Arabic in a US higher education setting

·Experience using the proficiency approach, content-based approach, and instructional technology at all levels of Arabic

·Experience with language program coordination and conducting professional development training

·Native or near native fluency in Modern Standard Arabic, one Arabic dialect, and in English

·Experience working in teams including with faculty and administrators

·Experience with material and curriculum development in rigorous programs


Preferred Qualifications:

  • ABD or Doctoral degree – Arabic Linguistics, Applied Linguistics or related fields
  • Successful record in program coordination in a US higher education setting
  • Experience with the Language Flagship program or other grant-funded projects
  • OPI tester certification
