Facilities & Services (F&S) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is conducting a search for Director of Transportation and Building Services in our Operations, Maintenance, and Alterations division. The Director provides leadership, management, and planning for all aspects of Transportation & Automotive Services and Building Services operations, including developing departmental policies, vehicle and equipment purchasing and purchase consultation. Manages the budget of the department and leads a diverse workforce of over 300 civil employees, including negotiated and prevailing rate employees.

  1. Responsible for all aspects of developing and executing a comprehensive program for Transportation, Garage, Carpool, and Building Services.
  2. The position is responsible for 1200 fleet vehicles for the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign and the cleaning of 13.2M square feet of academic and research facilities infrastructure.
  3. Develop business plans for the division, including marketing strategies and the expansion or reduction of services.
  4. Leads division initiatives including developing, implementing, and monitoring quality improvement strategies, plan resource allocations, service delivery systems and staffing and work with management staff and the campus community to determine the campus’ needs.
  5. Provide leadership and management of over 300 employees. Will set workplace climate and oversee all aspects of personnel management within the division including recruiting and retention, training and professional development, performance standards, and the promotion of comprehensive diversity and inclusion programs for the workforce.
  6. Establish and maintain safety guidelines and policies for the division that promote the highest standards of safety while enhancing productivity and the general morale of the workforce.
  7. Develop and submit annual budgets and rate structures for division business units. Monitor and adjust annual budget expenditures to meet priority maintenance and service requirements and established operating targets without incurring deficit spending.
  8. Develop and use productivity measures and process improvement metrics using work management systems and other tools to enhance division operations.
  9. Set the course for the division. Align the goals and objectives of the division with those of F&S and the campus to ensure that the efforts of the division complement the goals and objectives of the university.
  10. Make decisions about ongoing distribution of resources among the various divisional departments to align services with customers’ needs and campus requirements. Ensure information is effectively disseminated among campus customers and division employees.
  11. Provide expert consultation and assistance to the Executive Director and to campus leadership in respective functional areas. Work closely with F&S divisional counterparts, staff, and the campus community at large to effectively coordinate and deliver products and services.
  12. Ensure consistent adherence to F&S and University policies, work rules and guidelines by division employees.
  13. Serve as liaison to campus units for a wide variety of campus functions, leading or serving on campus wide teams and committees on behalf of or as requested by the Executive Director.
  14. Serve as a member of the Facilities & Services Executive Management Team, and act on behalf of the Executive Director in his/her absence.


The Director is expected to establish safety guidelines and policies for the department that promote a safe working environment while enhancing productivity and the general morale in the department.

The Director is expected to support the philosophies of F&S and UIUC.

The Director must exemplify high standards of competence, leadership, loyalty, service, and dedication.


Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Management, Economics, Public Administration, or a related field of study.

Minimum of 10 years of full-time managerial experience in fleet, transportation operations, and/or building cleaning services. Must be forward thinking, committed to safety and environmental concerns, and have demonstrated ability to effectively interact with a wide range of individuals including academic customers, unions, commercial vendors and other campus constituencies.


Experience with budget development and execution at the institutional level with a demonstrated track record of meeting financial operating targets.

Strong interpersonal skills.

Experience working in a union/prevailing wage environment.

Excellent communication skills and ability to articulate ideas and processes and give clear direction and guidance both orally and in writing.


Develop and promote safe operations programs, provide safety training, and support departmental safety initiatives and programs.

Monitor personnel to assure safety and security policies are being followed.


Physical Requirements Generally administrative type work but requiring extensive walking for job site reviews and some climbing via ladders in mechanical rooms and other limited use spaces.

Work Environment Regular visits to job sites and construction activities will result in occasionally hazardous and uncomfortable environment.
