The Department of Geography & GIS is seeking applicants for a Teaching Assistant Professor. The successful applicant will join a world-class research and education environment for GIS and geospatial data science. Primary responsibilities will include developing and teaching classroom-based and online courses in GIS and geospatial data science. The position also involves serving as an advisor of geography and GIS students, particularly students in the growing Professional Science Master’s in GIS program: The opportunity to teach non-GIS courses also exists based on the hire’s expertise and departmental teaching needs. Teaching Assistant Professors are expected to conduct disciplinary and/or pedagogical research and service to the department/college/university.


This position requires at least one year of experience in college or university-level teaching. A Ph.D. in GIS, geography, or a closely related field is also required by the time of appointment. Interest or experience in education research, curriculum development, current educational technologies, and a strong desire to create new and innovative course materials will enhance an application. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to make an instructional and curricular impact both within the Department and beyond, either through scholarly publications, invited talks, or other related activities involving their discipline, pedagogy and student interactions. The successful applicant should possess excellent interpersonal communication skills, a desire to interact with prospective students, excellent organization and time management skills, and demonstrated excellence in teaching and advising.


The teaching professorial position is a full-time, 9-month appointment, non-tenure track, renewable yearly subject to enrollments, funding, and positive performance evaluations. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. The actual start date is negotiable, beginning as early as October 1, 2021.

Academic Resources

Undergraduate Education

The University has a fundamental commitment to undergraduate education. Nearly 28,000 undergraduate students are enrolled in nine undergraduate divisions, which together offer some 4,000 courses in more than 150 fields of study.

Undergraduate admission is highly selective. In the 2001 freshman class, students in the middle 50% had ACT scores between 25 and 30 and ranked between the 83rd and 96th percentiles of their high school graduating classes.

The Arts
