Position Summary:

The center for “Protecting Personal Data Flow on the Internet” (ProperData), is a new center-scale research project recently funded by a SaTC Frontier grant from the National Science Foundation. The goal of ProperData is to advance personal data privacy and transparency via a combination of technical and policy solutions. The Center brings together a group of (approx. 12) faculty and (approx. 40) graduate students and postdocs across four US universities (UC Irvine, UC Davis, USC and Northeastern), spanning multiple disciplines (privacy, security, networking, Internet-of-Things, mobile devices, machine learning). It includes collaborations and interactions with the industry, non-profits, the policy sector, and one European research institute. UC Irvine is the lead institution, and the Director and Lead PI is a faculty with the department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science within the Samueli School of Engineering. The lead PI is a faculty with the department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, within the Samueli School of Engineering. EECS has an internationally renowned faculty working at the forefront of computer science and engineering.

The University of California, Irvine is currently accepting applications for the Assistant Director position to assist the project management and operations of the Center for “Protecting Personal Data Flow on the Internet” (ProperData). ProperData is a new center-scale project funded by an SaTC Frontier grant from the National Science Foundation. The Assistant Director will work closely with the Director/Lead PI and will perform professional and administrative duties to support the operations, management, and collaborative activities of ProperData, including the following: Research administrative support: facilitate research collaboration and coordinate interactions across the four universities, as well as with industry and policy partners, external advisors, sponsors; support all intra-UCI and project-wide activities. Manage communication and meetings; monitor budgets, purchasing and reimbursement; coordinate travel arrangements for conferences, meetings, visits and exchanges for researchers; process administrative issues to ensure all deadlines are met and short and long terms plans are appropriately completed. Communications: lead and coordinate the online presence of the center (website, twitter, newsletter, press releases), interfacing with the PIs and communications teams of the schools involved. Events Coordination: organize all aspects of ProperData research, education and outreach events, including but not limited to: the annual multi-day research symposium; virtual or in-person seminars and workshops; outreach events in coordination with the Office of Access and Inclusion (OAI), hackathons. Data tracking and reporting: track progress of research, education and outreach activities toward the Center's goals. Assist with collecting materials, preparing the annual progress report for NSF, and posting materials online. Track and update data related to students: their publications and internship and placement. Track and organize research outputs of the center: publications, presentations, news articles, collaborations, participation and outcomes from broader impact and outreach activities. The Assistant Director will work closely and report to the Director and Lead PI of the ProperData project and will have an indirect working relationship with the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the Samueli School of Engineering.

Compensation Range:

$66,300.00- $78,700.00

Required:

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Knowledge of a variety of administrative operational activities such as meeting and calendar management, team communication, purchasing and reimbursement, travel arrangements, etc.

Strong computer and Internet skills, or ability to quickly pick up online tools that enable and facilitate online communication and collaboration, including: Google and Microsoft suites, Acrobat, wikis/blogs/website updates, slack, zoom, etc.

Prior experience with one of the following: project management in a high tech/research/university/non-profit organization; research administration, communications, research administration, or IT.

Interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking.

Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality and discretion.

Effective organizational skills to prioritize and effectively plan short and long term plans.

Ability to work independently and to coordinate and interact effectively in a team setting, strong communication and writing skills with attention to detail.

Preferred:

Experience with event planning and coordination.

Knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques. Knowledge of protocols and procedures for budget, accounting and fund management.

Accounting and payroll, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines would be a plus.

Knowledge of University policies, regulations, and processes .

An MS or MBA degree, or equivalent work experience would be considered a plus, but are not required.
