Lecturer - Department of Mechanical Engineering & Technology
The College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at Eastern Washington University (EWU) invites applications for one faculty position in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Technology (MENT) at the lecturer level. The position is to begin in September 2021.
Programs in the Mechanical Engineering & Technology department offer students the opportunity to study along the spectrum of theory and application in engineering and technology. In addition to planning for a future Center for Advanced Manufacturing, we are working to expand our signature Industrial Robotics and Automation laboratory. The department offers accredited Bachelor's programs in Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Technology, as well as Bachelor's degrees in Manufacturing Technology and Construction Management Technology.
Eastern Washington University is a midsize regional, comprehensive institution offering high-quality liberal arts and professional undergraduate and graduate programs in Cheney, Spokane and elsewhere in Washington State. The Spokane metropolitan area is home to over 400,000 diverse residents and offers great four-season outdoor recreational opportunities and a vibrant arts and cultural community.
The MENT department is currently made up of 18 instructors, both tenure-track and lecturers, and roughly 600 undergraduate students. EWU is one of the most culturally and economically diverse universities in the state of Washington. Approximately one-third of the students are multicultural and half are first generation to college.
We are seeking broadly trained candidates who will be inspirational teachers, role models and mentors who complement the strengths of our faculty to engage in instructionally-intensive undergraduate programs, including distance teaching. A demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal access, of our students, faculty, staff and the public is desired. Additionally, all faculty are expected to actively participate in assessment of student learning and to engage in effective teaching.
Primary areas of responsibility include teaching in the department major programs, a willingness to contribute to industrial outreach, curriculum development, active student advising and professional service.

* Completed Master’s degree in a field related to construction, manufacturing, technology, or education;
* At least 3 years of relevant construction, manufacturing, and/or machine shop experience;
* Demonstrated ability or desire to teach technology topics, including shop and lab instruction;
* Excellent communication skills to meet the needs of our diverse student-body;
* Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal access, of our students, faculty, staff and the public.
* Candidates with expertise in construction, high-performance building design, or advanced manufacturing are particularly encouraged to apply;
* Five or more years’ experience of relevant construction, manufacturing, and/or machine shop experience;
* At least one year of teaching experience;
* Professional licensure and/or certification;
* Evidence of the ability to perform industry outreach.

Teaching includes the following additional responsibilities as defined in the faculty CBA:
* Meet all scheduled classes
* Plan, organize and inform students of course content, texts, readings, assignments, attendance expectations and methods of evaluation including grading scales
* Schedule and attend office hours
* Turn in grades according to established deadlines

Conditions of Employment:
This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value; as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment. Note: Interviews will be conducted via Zoom (camera must be enabled).
While we anticipate being open for in-person instruction for academic year 2021-22, should Washington State or university pandemic restrictions disallow for in-person instruction, then courses will be taught via online platforms, including Zoom and other technologies. Candidates must be able to demonstrate competence using these technologies.
The expected salary upon hire is $56,750.
