Department Description:Construction Services provides quality and professional construction services in support of maintaining, renovating and improving the function, safety, comfort and sustainability of campus facilities. The services delivered enable the University to preserve buildings while renovating, adapting and updating them to meet the changing needs of our customers and this campus. Our goal is to ensure that all projects are completed efficiently and effectively. Additionally, the quality of all craftsmanship will meet or exceed all Industry, Regulatory and University practices. Construction Services delivers renovation, alteration, maintenance or repair projects for the University with an estimated cost of less than five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000). Estimates are available upon request, prior to commencement of work.

Position Description:The primary purpose of the Senior Estimator is to supervise the estimating staff and to provide estimating and weekly scheduling for the Construction Services Department.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:Associate’s degree in the assigned discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require certification. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:Ability to effectively use a personal computer and software programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel; and ability to navigate within Auto CAD. Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of mandatory University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions, including but not limited to a public health emergency require the University to close.
Preferred Qualifications:A minimum of five years of progressive experience in supervising staff and managing work for repair and renovation projects in buildings including direct experience with estimating material and labor costs, scheduling work, monitoring the status of work, and receiving work requests.
Extensive knowledge of the methods, processes, tools, equipment, and materials used in providing construction services for repair and renovation projects for campus facilities including considerable knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, carpentry, painting, and masonry trades. In-depth knowledge of the various types and operations of building systems.
In-depth experience in working with construction and design professionals and ability to read and understand construction plans and specifications as required to develop construction estimates and schedules.
Extensive knowledge of and experience with the tools and practices including utilizing applicable computer programs required for developing projects costs and schedules.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with campus customers, in-house construction and design staff members, outside construction contractors and design consultants, equipment vendors, and with university managers.
Experience in leadership and management skills.
Valid NC Driver’s License or ability to obtain one prior to start date.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers. Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers. The University has arranged for IBM to offer computers at excellent prices.
