Professional Research Assistant

This Professional Research Assistant (PRA) will assist in NIH-funded research in a laboratory setting within the Immunology and Microbiology Department. The PRA candidate will perform assays, techniques, and analyses that contribute to team and individual research activities under the guidance of senior lab personnel. Specific tasks will include preparation and use of solutions and chemicals, aseptic culture of mammalian cells and bacteria, isolation and analysis of immune cell populations using immunology, flow cytometry, microscopy, and histology-based approaches. Biochemical, molecular biological, and data analysis techniques will also be used. The PRA will additionally be tasked with maintaining live research animals (rodents). Related tasks will include managing breeding of the rodents to generate animals with complex genotypes and performing specific research procedures with live rodents. Colony maintenance and experimental procedures will require the PRA to maintain accurate up-to-date records for the animal colony in electronic databases. The PRA can expect that their prior experience in research laboratory skills will be supplemented by additional training and supervision in new techniques, procedures, and analytical methods.Working Conditions:
This position requires a self-motivated and detail-oriented individual who has strong communication skills. To work effectively within the research team, the individual will need to regularly communicate and collaborate with other lab members. Various skills and techniques will be used and may change over time as needed to ensure completion of research projects. The PRA will thus have opportunity to learn new skills and apply new techniques and analytical methods. The PRA position is overtime exempt. Some experimental protocols will require the PRA to occasionally work in the evening, on weekends or holidays. The employee will be working closely with the principal investigator and with other scientists and students in the laboratory. There will be considerable opportunities for professional development and growth and the potential for the PRA to further their education.Salary and Benefits:
The salary range (or hiring range) has been established at $30,000-$60,000 depending on experience The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.The above salary range (or hiring range

Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, or related field.Prior hands-on experience in a research or analytical laboratory setting.
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire. Preferred Qualifications:
• Ideal candidate will have 1 year or more experience with laboratory procedures and techniques relevant for working in a research lab focused on study of immune responses to infectious agents, such as flow cytometry, molecular biology, and/or biochemical methods.
• Knowledge of and experience with aseptic techniques to maintain sterility and culture cells.
• Ability to enter and organize data into spreadsheets and databases; Experience keeping electronic logs and managing inventory.
• Experience handling rodents and maintaining breeding stocks of animals with complex genotypes.
• Experience in an animal research facility.
• Attention to detail.
• Planning and organizational skills.
• Excellent oral communication skills.
• Curiosity and enthusiasm for learning about and participating in biomedical research.
