The Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering at the University of Florida (UF) invites applications for a full-time, twelve-month non- tenure track faculty and administrative position at the rank of Professor of Practice. This position will be a member of the Florida Engineering Experiment Station (FLEX) and may be granted a courtesy appointment in the academic department of their expertise.

Reporting to FLEX, this unique position is seeking candidates with both research and administrative leadership. The Regional Director of the UF Innovation Station at the Research and Engineering Education Facility (REEF) conducts research and pursues research opportunities, manages the daily operations and staff at the REEF, provides oversight for research activities and educational programs, and engages the local industry and community to support regional economic development and foster local connections to UF’s resources.  

Research responsibilities include serving as the on-site manager for Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Research Contract (currently 20 active projects), discussing potential new projects with AFRL researchers, identifying UF faculty members to serve as Principal Investigators on projects, initiating and serving as the PI on projects relevant to personal expertise and hiring and supervising postdoctoral researchers and research scientists to work on AFRL tasks.

Responsibilities for the educational programs includes serving as the on-site manager for the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC) Education Contract, recruiting new graduate students, helping new students with study plans, supervising directed research courses, and finding advisors for new Ph.D. students. In addition, this position will write monthly status reports and the annual report for education contract, and work with Engineering Department Chairs and the Electronic Delivery of Gator Engineering (EDGE) Director to plan new courses and professional development offerings to meet Eglin needs.

As a Regional Director for the UF Innovation Station at REEF, this position will help establish and grow partnerships with the academic/research, private and public sectors in the region with a focus on growing and diversifying the region’s innovation economy. This position will connect industry and government partners to faculty for consultation, students for internships and employment, technology for commercialization, unique equipment and talent for R&D support, and training infrastructure and content for workforce development all with the goal to grow the region’s high-tech ecosystem.

Operational responsibilities for the REEF include provisioning on-site leadership for REEF faculty and staff, allocating lab and office space, facilitate/support faculty acquisition of major research instrumentation and management of existing equipment inventory, represent REEF to Eglin leadership (including AFRL/RW, AFLCMC/EN, and Air Force Test Center), serve as REEF representative for Okaloosa County EDC TeCMEN organization, approve use of REEF meeting space, including FOUO (for official use only) meetings and consult with UF Facilities staff to prioritize REEF maintenance needs.

Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants holding a doctoral degree in engineering however, those with commensurate industry experience and a masters degree in a related technical field may also be considered. Knowledge and experience required include a broad understanding of systems engineering, guidance, navigation, and control, test and evaluation, and materials properties. This position will also mentor graduate and postdoctoral researchers and assist with technical and programmatic reports, journal articles and conference presentations.
