Job Overview

The Fellow will work as part of the Health Justice Alliance (HJA) under the supervision of the Medical-Legal Partnership Director of the Cancer LAW Project (with secondary supervision by Vicki Girard, Faculty Director of the HJA). Under primary sponsorship of Equal Justice Works, the Fellow's 2 year project is to develop and implement a program to deliver healthcare and will/estate planning services to low-income patients served by the HJA's Cancer LAW Project. The Fellow will:
  • Work with the Cancer LAW project director, faculty members, and HJA staff to assess unmet legal needs related to healthcare and future planning for patients of Washington Cancer Institute.
  • Build expertise in estate planning and provide direct legal services to patients
  • Develop and implement a pro bono program and referral network for healthcare and estate planning needs
  • Engage directly with the DC community and private law firms on behalf of HJA
  • Contribute to the HJA's medical-legal partnership research and other efforts as related to the project
  • Other complimentary tasks and projects as assigned

Work Interactions

The Fellow reports directly to the Medical Legal Partnership Director of the Cancer LAW Project. The Fellow will have interaction with students, faculty and support offices on the Law Center's campus, in addition to external partners and stakeholders.

Requirements and Qualifications

The position requires a United States law degree and admission or pending application to the DC Bar. Relevant coursework or other experience providing direct legal services on behalf of low-income individuals required.

Other skills: Excellent research and legal writing skills required. Ability to operate professionally in interactions with academic and other stakeholders required. Ability to work well as part of a small team and supervise student work in a professional manner also required. Experience with the medical-legal partnership model preferred.
