Job Summary:

The Financial Aid Specialist reports to the Director of Financial Aid. Responsible for providing information, advice and assistance regarding various types of Federal and State financial aid available to students on campus and students enrolled in the Inmate Education Program. The Financial Aid Specialist is responsible for the administration of all financial programs. Minimum travel required. Performs other duties as assigned. Must be able to pass and maintain Federal Clearance for the prison.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate degree with two years’ experience in jobs leading to this, or similar jobs is required.

Knowledge of computerized electronic processes in the delivery of financial aid. Experience with automated systems related financial aid management (BANNER, preferred). Competent in the use of Microsoft Office software.

Knowledge of federal and state financial assistance educational programs. Working knowledge of personal computer and various software.

Effective written and verbal communication.

Solve problems and multi-task.

Assist students, faculty and staff in professional manner.

Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.

Plan, schedule, and manage projects and assignments.

Promote a positive campus image and establish effective working relationships with others.

Comply with college policies and procedures.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, see and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, kneel, bend, crawl and twist upper body. The employee must regularly carry and lift up to 5 pounds, and move up to 5 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of financial aid processing for federal, state and local programs. Knowledge of Banner software a plus. Knowledge of FERPA.

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four year college or university is preferred.


Minimum 32,000; Commensurate with experience. Plus benefits

Work Hours:

40 hours a week. Some overtime is required during peak periods.

Essential Job Functions:

Serve as receptionist, duties including answering telephone, forwarding calls, taking messages. Manage counter operations.

Provide answers to questions from student, faculty, staff and the public about to financial aid.

Post 3rd party agency charges to student accounts.

Monitor student refund checks.

Essential Job Functions:

Analyze student’s applications and determine eligibility for financial aid. Requests additional documents as needed. Verifies information on those who have been chosen for verification.

Award aid and generates communications to award or deny aid.

Advise students about satisfactory academic progress, violations, and strategies to achieve good standing.

Recommend appeal procedures for unusual circumstances.

Advise student about short-term loan eligibility and terms.

Essential Job Functions:

Complete the financial aid folder and enter documentation received into the computer.
Scan and index files.

Essential Job Functions:

Perform outreach activities to area high schools, community centers, shopping centers, and various agencies to present and share financial aid information about types of aid, eligibility, and application processes.

Perform the Daily Download and Upload of files that are submitted to the Department of Education through ED Connect.
