Organizational Unit Overview:

The purpose of the East Carolina University Police Department is to provide the campus community with a safe and orderly environment conducive to the educational mission of East Carolina University. To accomplish this, the police department protects lives and property, investigates crimes, presents programs to deter crime and enforces federal, state and local laws and/or policies. The East Carolina University Police Department consists of the following divisions: Patrol Operations (Bicycle Patrol, Foot Patrol and Vehicle Patrol), Investigations, Crime Prevention, Telecommunications & Records, & the Office of the Chief.

Job Duties :

The primary purpose of a Police Telecommunicator is to operate the Telecommunications Office at the East Carolina University Police Department 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is essential for the Telecommunicator to possess the ability to multi-task and to possess critical thinking skills during his or her shift. The Telecommunicator will monitor and operate all communication equipment, maintaining contact with all field personnel and other enforcement agencies by means of radios, telephone systems, computer terminals and face-to-face contact. This will keep the flow of communications between the general public, departmental employees, and other law enforcement agencies running smoothly and swiftly.

The selected candidate will be responsible for operating a communications center. Duties of this position consist of operating a two-way radio; monitoring and operating multiple telephone lines; operating a Computer- Aided Dispatch (CAD) computer station; monitoring and operating fire, intrusion, and panic alarm systems; monitoring security cameras; communicating effectively with the public; and typing and filing reports. The ECU Police Department is a 24-hour, 365 days-per-year operation.

Candidates will work with a diversified community; communicate effectively with those who may be irate; make effective decisions in emergency life and death situations; prioritize calls and identify potential dangers; and work as a member of a team and interact favorably with all students, staff, faculty, and visitors. The selected candidate will be able to work 12-hour rotating shifts.
Prefer DCI Certification, but will consider uncertified candidates. If not certified, the selected candidate must, within 45 days of hire, attend a four- day class in the operation of a police computer and successfully pass a test for certification.

Minimum Education/Experience:

High School diploma and sufficient experience to demonstrate ability to work under pressure. Additional Education and Experience will be necessary for progressive steps (Journey and Advanced). Requires certification as a Division of Criminal Information computer operator or the ability to achieve certification within 45 days of employment. May require Basic Telecommunicator Certification in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Candidate must undergo an extensive background investigation including, but not limited to, psychological evaluation, medical exam, and drug screen.

License or Certification required by the Department:

DCI certification.
