Assistant Dean, Experiential Education - Georgetown University Law Center

Tradition. Innovation. A superb faculty, hundreds of course offerings — and all of this just steps away from the Capitol and Supreme Court. Georgetown Law is an exceptional institution in an enviable location.

Our top-rated experiential learning programs allow our students to take classroom theory and apply it to real-life legal challenges right here in Washington, D.C. — immersing themselves in public policy, corporate, civil and criminal law.

The Assistant Dean for Experiential Education oversees the administration of all non-clinical experiential courses - namely externships, practicum courses, and simulations (including first-year Week One simulations). They are responsible for the development and support of courses in each of these areas, serve as the point of contact for faculty teaching these courses, assist students with issues that arise in these courses, and ensure that these courses run smoothly (through scheduling, enrollment, etc.). Reporting to the Vice Dean, and supervising two Experiential Education staff members, the Assistant Dean has duties that include but are not limited to:

Experiential Education Curriculum Management
  • Work with potential faculty to propose new experiential courses that fulfill a curricular need and shepherd these through the relevant faculty committee for approval
  • Conduct an annual curricular review of the non-clinical experiential curriculum to identify gaps, redundancies, opportunities for innovation, and alignment with the clinical and doctrinal curriculum
  • Ensure experiential courses meet ABA standards
  • Review all experiential faculty course evaluations on a semester-by-semester basis and follow-up, as needed, with each faculty member to discuss necessary course changes and/or other supports
  • Ensure all experiential faculty have received and reviewed their course evaluations
  • Oversee the annual experiential course scheduling project; and ensure courses are scheduled correctly, that they are designated as experiential in Georgetown systems, and that the enrollment process is smooth for students and faculty alike

Student Advising
  • Meet with students interested in experiential courses
  • Advise students about how to meet their six credit experiential course requirement
  • Troubleshoot student issues that arise in experiential courses

Faculty Support
  • Assist faculty with teaching- and student-related questions as they arise
  • Collect and disseminate best practices for faculty teaching experiential courses

Administrative Management
  • Work with colleagues in the Office of Academic Affairs, develop and track policies related to experiential courses and ensure these are in line with policies for the rest of the curriculum
  • Address any policy issues that arise - whether in relation to students or faculty
  • Supervise both the Director of Experiential Education and the Program Coordinator for Experiential Education
  • Provide feedback to direct reports on professional development and performance
  • Develop and oversee the department's annual budget

  • J.D.
  • 7+ years relevant experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of experiential education pedagogy and ABA standards
  • Experience with student advising and public interest programming
  • Excellent judgment, organizational skills, and attention to detail

Preferred qualifications
  • Background in teaching experiential courses in a law school setting
  • Experience with managing small teams
