Departmental Overview

The Energy and Resources Group (ERG), an augmented graduate group at UCB, is a unique interdisciplinary program of 10 core faculty, 200 faculty affiliates, and 70 graduate students in the Rausser College of Natural Resources (RCNR). ERG is engaged in research and education for a sustainable environment and a just society. ERG offers the PhD, two professional Masters' degrees, two concurrent degree programs, and two undergraduate minors and a certificate program. The Graduate Student Affairs Officer (GSAO) provides comprehensive student services to the ERG Manager, Chair, faculty, and graduate students.

Responsibilities

Academic Advising: Advises students and faculty on departmental/school/college and university policies and procedures; reviews students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree/program completion; identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions; devises curriculum planning in collaboration with chair/dean and faculty, and with other departments. Advises students on complex interdisciplinary degree completion requirements and interdepartmental course selection that will satisfy ERG requirements when there are no clear precedents. Acts as liaison to Graduate Division Degrees, Admissions, Fellowships, and Appointments offices. Interprets Graduate Policy to students and faculty. Writes exception petitions and represents students with Graduate Division Dean.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI): Identifies and implements opportunities to expand the scope and action to support student diversity in the entire pipeline of student recruiting, student support, and career support. Collaborates with Manager, Chair, Head Graduate Advisor, faculty, staff and campus to establish equitable and just policies and to identify outside resources to expand the scope and success of ERG DEI activities. Contributes to and supports the development, revision, and execution of ERG's Strategic Plan for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Handles complex/sensitive academic counseling for students who may fall under underrepresented categories. Identifies and supports these students on complex concerns or grievances and reach out to additional resources as needed.

Student Conduct: Responsible for interpreting campus policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes, and issues regarding discrimination. Determines barriers, distractions and complications affecting a student's academic success, helps students recognize these key non-academic issues and makes appropriate referrals for additional therapeutic counseling and/or assistance from other units.

Career Counseling: Advises department/college/school students on the job market process, and the standards and norms specific to the student's field of study. Organizes career advising and alumni networking events. Develops and enhances an alumni recruitment network. Identifies and cultivates potential employers.

Recruitment and Admissions: Plans and implements outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions; advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals; utilizing in-depth knowledge of the organization's admissions criteria, helps rank applicants for admissions; evaluates domestic and international transcripts for degree eligibility; initiates and arranges student recruitment visits to Berkeley. Oversees outreach and recruitment of students offered admission. Maintains records and reports admissions statistics and recommendations to Graduate Division.

Student Funding & Employment: Oversees the administration, evaluation, and awarding of student fellowships, grants, scholarships, and other awards; advises students on financial aid options on campus and extra-mural fellowship opportunities; oversees processes for equitable assignment of GSIs and coordinates GSI assignments each term. Manages hiring of GSIs, GSRs, Readers and Tutors including determination of eligibility, compensation level, funding source and compliance with Graduate Division policy. Liaison to College research administrators, accountants, and human resources staff to coordinate ASE hiring processes. Advises faculty on student employee hiring and employment practices and procedures.

Course Scheduling, Course Development and Enrollment Management: Course Scheduling: Devises curriculum planning in collaboration with chair/dean and faculty, and with other departments, to ensure students' progress through course sequences, avoiding conflicts, and ensuring compliance with campus-wide policies.

Events: Plans and implements complex, high-visibility student events, such as prospective student events and commencements.

Policy Advising: Advises Chair, Manager, and core faculty on departmental and university policies and procedures and student services issues. Supports new faculty in understanding course, degree, and student conduct procedures and policies. Sits ex-officio and advises on academic policy on the ERG Admissions Committee, Curriculum Committee, ERG Core Faculty Committee, and ERG Executive Committee. Attends meetings and advises student-led equity and inclusion committee and other student-run policy committees.

Other: Maintains graduate student records. Prepares statistical data on students; other assignments from Manager, Head Graduate Advisor, or Chair. Assists fellow staff as needed.

Required Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge or the ability to quickly learn of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge the ability to quickly learn of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
  • Ability in problem identification, reasoning.
  • Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including excellent listening and social perception skills
  • Multicultural competencies; experience working with diverse populations; familiarity with social justice concepts
  • Ability to identify at-risk students and advise students and faculty on appropriate responses and support.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced training in advising and counseling techniques
  • Experience with web-based student information and admissions systems
  • Experience in an interdisciplinary environment and with research fields related to ERG and/or similar fields.

Salary & Benefits

This is a monthly paid (exempt) position. Annual salary will be commensurate with experience, with an anticipated starting salary of $51,700-$74,700.
