Position Description:
The Research & Development Engineer functions as part of the Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) group in the Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences, and is responsible for the design and development of detector systems and ion sources to improve analytical performance of the custom ion microprobe instruments to achieve scientific objectives. Also responsible for highly specialized maintenance and repair of the customized electronic, mechanical, and vacuum systems of the instruments. The incumbent must possess a strong technical background in analog and digital electronics at the system, circuit board, and component level; working knowledge of ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems; professionalism and competence in a small team environment; and versatility, innovation, independence, follow-through, team-spirit and an ability to communicate effectively with laboratory scientists, post-docs, staff, and students.

The incumbent will, on occasion, supervise graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral scholars, researchers, and/or visiting scientists at the UCLA National Ion Microprobe Facility concerning proper use of ancillary laboratory equipment and maintenance of instrument components.
