Shift: TRIO Tutoring Services are available Mondays through Thursdays, from 12 pm to 11 pm, for approximately 14 weeks each semester (no tutoring over winter sessions; option of summer tutoring as need arises). The Science Tutor is asked to work, on average, two to three days per week, ideally with some evening hours, for a total of 8-12 hours per week during the times listed above.
Regular Days Off: Friday, Saturday and Sundays
Salary: $25.00 Per hour

General Statement of Duties:

The TRIO Student Support Services Program ("TRIO") at Westfield State University seeks highly qualified applicants for a part-time Science Tutor position to begin in early September, 2021 (start of the fall semester). The candidate will be able to demonstrate academic competency in a science field as well as evidence of ability to tutor college students. Expertise in Biology and Chemistry is preferred. Common classes students seek tutoring in include: Human Biology, Biology Today, Anatomy & Physiology I & II, General Biology I and II, and other upper-level biology major courses. For Chemistry, students regularly seek support in General Chemistry I and II and Organic Chemistry I and II. Ability to tutor in other science-related areas, such as Movement Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Health Sciences, is a plus. The Science Tutor should be comfortable helping students understand assignments and integrate best practices for study techniques and academic skills.

The Student Support Services Program is a federally funded TRIO program, providing academic support services to college students with a range of academic needs and who are first-generation college students (parent/s do not have a four-year bachelor's degree), low income, and/or have a disability.

Essential:

The Science Tutor can expect to work with students taking a range of introductory level science courses, as well as with science majors and minors taking upper-level science courses. The position calls for supplemental instruction and tutoring in a content area with an emphasis on building strong study skills. The tutor will most often work with students in-person, one-on-one, and will also work with small groups of students occasionally. Additionally, the tutor will provide one-on-one, remote tutoring via Zoom video conferencing to students as needed. The tutor will be primed on the pedagogical approaches preferred for work with TRIO students but will be expected to have the competency to effectively tutor students starting immediately. The tutor may be invited to attend professional development sessions and/or select program events periodically. The tutor will be willing to utilize our online scheduling system for managing appointments with students and keep basic records of student contact and progress.


Requirements:

Minimum Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related science content field
  • Previous experience working as a tutor
  • Knowledge of how to help students develop strong, transferable study skills

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree or progress toward a post-graduate degree in a related content field
  • Experience working with low income and first-generation college students
  • Experience working with students with disabilities
  • A commitment to assessing individual academic needs with a focus on developmental education and explicit instruction
  • A willingness to infuse some of the principles of Universal Design for Instruction into tutoring practices
  • Experience with a TRIO program (or similar support program)
