Position Summary:

This is a facility support position in an AAALAC accredited animal facility at the College of Veterinary Medicine. Incumbent will perform all aspects of animal cage and equipment sanitation. This position will report to the Laboratory Animal Facilities Supervisor, Central Animal Facility.
Job will be working primarily in a cage wash area performing sanitization duties such as; cleaning, autoclaving, and prepping animal cages and ancillary equipment following prescribed schedules and methods. Cleans and sanitizes floors, wash rooms, storage rooms, and procedure rooms. Keeps work areas clean and organized. Job will adherence to established standard operating procedures while performing duties; including the appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Operates cage washers, dump stations, autoclaves, pressure washers, auto water systems, and sanitizing equipment. Initiates and maintains cage washer, autoclave, equipment and supply inventory logs, as directed. Responsible for restocking supply inventories and the processing and disposition of recyclables and biowaste. Performs minor preventative maintenance duties and integrated pest management (IPM) tasks following established schedules. Participates in staff meetings, continuing education and training classes as directed. Transports equipment and supplies to other facilities and off-site buildings.
Provides assistance to animal care staff, equipment service and research personnel. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to promote and foster teamwork in order to meet program and facility objectives is essential.

Physical Demands:

Withstand sustained periods of physical activity such as standing, bending, stooping, reaching above shoulder level and lift up to 50 pounds. Work under challenging conditions (high humidity/temperature, unpleasant odors, animal excreta and noise). Work involves some exposure to biohazards, chemicals and/or physical risks, while following established safety procedures. The ability to wear PPE (protective clothing, face shields, safety glasses, dust mask, respirators, and gloves) and stand on hard surfaces for prolonged periods of time. Work may be physically demanding involving the transport, relocation and positioning of supplies and caging equipment.

Performs daily sanitization duties in animal facility including cleaning, sanitizing, autoclaving and prepping animal cages and ancillary equipment. Assures cages and equipment are appropriately sanitized and maintained in accordance with standard operating procedures and supervisors instructions.
