About the College/Unit/Department:

UGA’s College of Journalism and Mass Communication celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2015. The college is home to the Peabody Awards and a variety of centers, institutes, and labs, including the Digital Media Attention and Cognition Lab; the Games and Virtual Environments Lab; the Carmical Sports Media Institute; the Center for Health and Risk Communication; the Cox Institute for Journalism Innovation, Management and Leadership; the Cox Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research; and the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), along with its Best of Photojournalism Awards.

The college offers M.A., M.F.A., and Ph.D. degrees, and it offers undergraduate degrees in journalism, advertising, public relations, and entertainment and media studies. The college hosts student chapters of the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Women in Media, the Online News Association, NPPA, the Society of Professional Journalists, and the Association for Women in Sports Media.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in journalism or mass communication, or a Ph.D. in another field or discipline that includes a stream of journalism- and media-related research. A.B.D. candidates who will complete their degrees by April 1, 2023, will be considered. A.B.D. candidates will be considered but must provide additional documentation per Academic Affairs Policy 1.09-12 “Limited-term Faculty Appointment Pending Award of Terminal Degree” before hire.

Position Summary:

The Department of Journalism at the University of Georgia’s College of Journalism and Mass Communication invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in journalism to begin in August 2022. This assistant professor will teach both graduate and undergraduate courses and contribute to the research mission of the department. The successful candidate will have a research agenda and proven research record in journalism- and media-related areas. We welcome all research methods. The successful candidate must be able to teach effectively in our journalism curriculum at the undergraduate and graduate levels (grady.uga.edu/academics/journalism) and in our college-wide Ph.D. program (grady.uga.edu/academics/ph-d-degree-program). Mentoring graduate students is expected. The typical teaching assignment is two courses per semester. Finally, the successful candidate will contribute to our ongoing efforts to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the department and college.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate familiarity with journalism practice. In addition, it is desired that candidates demonstrate an interest in mentoring graduate students and possess an ability to engage students from diverse backgrounds, worldviews, and life experiences.
