Position Summary

The Interior Design program in the School of Planning, Design & Construction (SPDC) at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor starting in August 2022.

The successful candidate will contribute to the school vision in creating sustainable and healthy built, natural, and virtual environments. The Interior Design program seeks a creative and motivated colleague who will advance the excellence of the academic community through their teaching, research, and service. The successful candidate is expected to teach all levels of Interior Design core courses, advise and/or teach graduate students, engage in service to the profession and the university, and maintain an active research/creative scholarship program through publishing peer-reviewed journal articles and securing research grants. The position is open to a broad range of specializations in research and teaching. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in their teaching, service, and research activities.

This appointment is 45% research, 45% teaching, and 10% service.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Interior Design or related field.

Minimum Requirements

Earned doctorate in Interior Design or related field by position start date.

At least one degree (either bachelor, master or doctoral) must be in Interior Design.

Strong potential for scholarly research productivity and innovative teaching in undergraduate and graduate courses is required.

Desired Qualifications

Desired qualifications include: Bachelor's degree in Interior Design, NCIDQ certification or NCIDQ eligibility, professional practice experience, experiences in teaching interior design studios, expertise in current technologies (AutoCAD Architecture, Revit, and Adobe Creative Suites), and familiarity with CIDA accreditation guidelines.

The Interior Design Program was established in 1935. The Program offers Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design, Master of Arts in Environmental Design, and Doctor of Philosophy in Planning, Design and Construction with a concentration in Environmental Design. The four-year undergraduate program is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) since 1976. The Interior Design program consists of the dynamic group of faculty with diverse scholarly specializations who work together to advance teaching and creative/research scholarship in a collegial environment. Faculty and students in the Interior Design Program respect the values and expertise of individual members and strongly advocate for diversity and professional collaboration. The School of Planning, Design, and Construction unites four academic programs related to the built environment: Construction Management, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, and Urban and Regional Planning, with 43 faculty and academic specialists, and 8 staff members. The School offers 8 degree pathways from Bachelors to Ph.D. – including 5 professionally accredited degrees with over 350 undergraduate and 50 graduate students. The School is jointly administered by the Colleges of Agriculture & Natural Resources and Social Science.
