Position Summary

As part of the Office for Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives (I3) Educational Team, this position is responsible for developing and implementing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) educational and training opportunities for students, faculty and staff at Michigan State University (MSU) to share and learn through interactive participation. The Office for Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives Education Team seeks a highly motivated, organized, collaborative leader to coordinate the MSU Dialogues program, support general educational development activities, and contribute to the overall learning of students and employees in the areas of intergroup relations and social justice education. The coordinator is jointly responsible for the strategic planning, vision, supervision and empowerment of staff, and administrative and fiscal responsibility of MSU Dialogues. The coordinator helps to guide the program’s curricular and extracurricular activities and supports the work of the I3 Education Team as well as the community of professionals engaged in DEI education efforts across the university.

The coordinator is responsible for tracking budgetary expenses, hiring and training program facilitators, and program evaluation for MSU Dialogues. The position requires knowledge, skills and abilities related to intergroup, intercultural, and social justice education, student development, and group facilitation. All programs under the office’s Education Team seek to respond to the needs of students and employees in the campus community in ways that are aligned with the university’s core values of quality, inclusiveness, and connectivity. MSU Dialogues is a key component of this work.

Academic & Program Administration

Contribute to the MSU Dialogues program including program strategy and the articulation of goals and objectives in conjunction with the Education Team; collaborate with the Ed Team and other community partners on curriculum planning; recruit, train and develop student, faculty and staff MSU Dialogue facilitators; develop evaluation instruments and protocols to inform further improvement of the program and outcomes; foster an inclusive and welcoming workplace climate; develop and maintain professional expertise in the theory, research and best practices in intergroup relations; and provide guidance and support to students, staff and faculty in an inclusive and culturally responsive manner.

1. Program Management, Development and Assessment

Program Management and Facilitation

Strong content knowledge in intergroup dialogue

Manage dialogue program development - including, but not limited to: Hiring and training of facilitators, Scheduling and organization of cohorts and events related to MSU Dialogues, PowerPoint slide development; Participant journal development.

Development of facilitator training programs and facilitator materials

Advise faculty/staff and student dialogue facilitators

Facilitate and moderate facilitator reflection circles

Lead facilitator trainings

Plan for and manage resources

Assess MSU Dialogue curricular and resource needs

Advise on fundraising plan

Supervision and Personnel Management

Hire, supervise, coach and evaluate MSU Dialogues facilitators by providing regular performance feedback for facilitators

Program Assessment

Refine program assessment instruments using quantitative and qualitative methodology.

2. Educational Development Activities

Campus and Consultation Liaison Role

Consult with MSU students, faculty and staff regarding dialogic and DEI education processes. Provide regular workshops to the MSU community on dialogue and inclusive practices. Collaborate and assist with the Education Team’s activities. Develop and enhance MSU Dialogues programming as a model in intergroup dialogue practices.

Promotional Activities

Develop robust publicity strategies; Interface with others on campus and beyond who are interested in intergroup dialogue.

Research

Keep current on advancements and research around intergroup dialogue, social justice education, and peer facilitation. Assist in incorporating research-based knowledge into best practices. Knowledge of Qualtrics, IRB processes, and data analysis desired.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in a liberal arts field or higher education; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in planning and overseeing seminars and conferences including public relations, organizing and disseminating training materials and information both written and web-based; budget and records maintenance and computer support; experience in supervision, database, spreadsheet, word processing, desktop publishing, knowledge of HTML programming and web site development and management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

• Requires Bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred), preferably in a liberal arts field or higher education, 2 years of experience working in an academic setting, ability to learn quickly and prioritize multiple demands, experience working with a diverse population, as well as a demonstrated interest in student retention and academic success;
• Expertise in intergroup relations theory and intergroup dialogue pedagogy;
• Experience supervising staff and students and working with faculty;
• Demonstrated accomplishment fostering teamwork and cooperation as well as a sense of community around a shared vision and set of values;
• Experience with budget management;
• Demonstrated success in working with and participating in programs about diversity, equity, and inclusion;
• Well-developed interpersonal skills, and excellent oral and written communication and attention to detail;
• Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary and cross-unit collaboration;
• Ability to collaborate and work well with students, faculty, and staff from a wide-range of experiences and identities;
• Impeccable professional ethics and standards working with diverse populations.
• Demonstrated experience developing and refining curriculum;
• Direct experience with program assessment and evaluation;
• Strong leadership and team-building skills, especially in the creation and leadership of democratic, non-hierarchical environments;
• Experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods; Experience utilizing Qualtrics in program assessment
• Experience with fundraising
• Knowledge of promotional design and practice
