The Director of Stewardship develops and implements major stewardship programs, supervises a staff of two writers, and is responsible for the stewardship budget for our busy office. The successful candidate is a systems thinker and able writer with experience in fundraising or in marketing and sales. Possessing exceptional team-building skills, the Director collaborates with gift officers, information systems designers, and alumni relations staff to define stewardship communication and data management systems. With gifts from our most important donors to oversee - scholarships, endowed chairs, research funds, and new facilities – and custom acknowledgement letters of all gifts of 10k and more, the Associate Director of Stewardship has a major opportunity to combine proven methods with creative new ideas to develop best practices in gift stewardship.Job Description
Participate and supervise staff in evaluation of stewardship activity and creation of comprehensive and creative plans for stewardship communications across PMDAR, with special emphasis on specific target areas – campaign priorities, scholarship funds, professorships, prize funds, research funds, facilities construction projects, and institutional gifts.
Remain current on the educational, research, clinical, and financial needs and goals of PENN Medicine.
Develop best practices that consider both current and forward-looking approaches.
Supervise staff in the management and execution of such projects as stewardship of scholarships, endowed professorships, prize, and research funds, ensuring timely completion of the annual reporting cycle. This includes writing plans and plan elements such as templates, acknowledgement letters, reports, bulletins, and brochure copy.
Lead and direct a staff to achieve optimum results by:
- Communicating financial and key performance indicators and results to staff members
- Establishing priorities and goals for all staff.
- Managing staffing needs and identifying areas for organizational development updates or changes
- Guiding the talent identification and professional development needs, processes and outcomes within the entire unit in line with the University’s diversity and inclusion priorities
- Setting clear performance expectations and holding staff accountable for outcomes through frequent feedback and coaching
- Ensuring open communications among team members, engaging in team building efforts and holding regular staff meetings that embrace and support the group’s diversity
- Inspiring and motivating staff to achieve optimum results
Collaborate with and gain buy-in from stakeholders from across the organization.
Work with Data Services to improve scheduling and tracking of stewardship activities.
Collaborate with working group of stewardship officers across the University at regular meetings to assess stewardship activity, needs, best practices, and emerging opportunities.
BA/BS and 5 to 7 years experience in communications or equivalent combination of education and experience required (two years’ experience as a stewardship fundraising professional/writer, or as a sales and marketing writer desirable). Experience in higher education, or health care preferred.
Excellent command of language, grammar, spelling, with a good eye for detail.
Supervisory and project management experience.
Team-building skills with knowledge of the academic environment preferred, and the ability to relate comfortably to alumni, faculty members, administrators, and staff.
