Job Description Summary

The Center for Innovation & Precision Dentistry (CiPD) is a vibrant community of faculty, trainees and researchers in Penn Dental Medicine and Penn’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences who:
•Perform advanced research focused on discovery and translation of new therapies, diagnostics and devices to address unmet needs in oral health
•Train the next generation of leaders in dental, oral and craniofacial research and oral healthcare innovation

The MANAGING DIRECTOR will oversee Center activities, collating information and data, support research endeavors, as well as work closely with the center leadership to manage day-to-day operations. This position will be responsible for managing, monitoring and coordinating activities of a NIH-funded interschool post-doctoral training program. Additionally, the position will prepare presentations, analytics, trending statistics, collection and assembly of progress reports/database, and manage Center’s research and training programming and budgeting. The manager will also support center leaderships’ initiatives to develop further the CiPD community and to seek federal, private and commercial funding sources for all programs.

Job Description

The CiPD Managing Director will play a key role in developing, implementing and enhancing operations of the CiPD, including activities that support center’s leadership, faculty, trainees, staff and external stakeholders to facilitate the growth and success of the center, and will facilitate interactions with other centers and institutes that form the research, training, and innovation ecosystems at the University and the region. The Managing Director will provide operational and administrative support services for budget monitoring and development, and various administrative elements including grant management, database maintenance, progress reports, and coordination/organization of center’s activities such as pilot projects, workshops and symposia, web/social media updates, among others.

Position is contingent on continued funding.


  • ADMINISTRATION: Oversee center activities, which include managing seed funds, pilot projects, and supervising staff and student workers. Performs regular assessments of operational workflows for continuous improvement and enhancements. 25 %

  • TRAINING: Manages and evaluates trainee recruitment progress providing follow-up as needed. Help coordinate, develop and disseminate interschool workshops, seminar, research retreats, and courses around Center’s research and training programs. – 20%

  • FINANCIAL: Manage program budgets, seed funds and control of expenditures. Develop regular progress reports, financial reports, and annual reports for funding agencies. 20%

  • PROGRAMMING/COMMUNICATIONS: Manage the center’s social media presence, webpage, meetings, advisory meetings, seminar series/symposia/lecture forums etc. 20%

  • GRANT MANAGEMENT/SUPPORT: Contribute to efforts that expand funding support through organizing proposal teams, managing and writing non-scientific content, managing forms and budgets. Collaborate in the development and implementation of protocols on data collection, database maintenance and expansion. 15%

  • Other duties as assigned. – 5%


A Master’s Degree with 3-5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. Experience in a higher education and/or research environment.

The successful candidate will be an independent but highly collaborative professional with team approach to problem-solving. They will need to have exceptional communication, leadership and management skills to work productively with a wide range of faculty, trainees, researchers, and staff members across the University. Must genuinely enjoy working with others and have a strong service orientation. Also essential is a keen and relentless attention to detail, along with the ability to multi-task efficiently and handle competing demands while remaining cool under pressure. Must be highly proficient with word processing, spreadsheet software, and should be experienced with web content management software and social media applications. Must be experienced with database query applications, and gathering, analyzing and presenting relevant data, including graphs essential to evaluation of success of center’s initiatives.
