Position Description:
UCLA Extension is considered one of the top programs of its kind, offering to more than 35,000 students per year approximately 4,500 classes and non-degree certificate programs to meet the professional development, continuing education and personal enrichment needs of the full spectrum of nontraditional students as well as companies and organizations throughout and beyond the Los Angeles region.

Under the direction of the Associate Dean, Academic and Faculty Affairs, the Director of Instructional Design and Learning Innovation (IDLI) will provide leadership and support for the design and development of online, hybrid, and web-enhanced courses at UCLA Extension through the use of instructional design frameworks and innovative learning technologies. The Director of IDLI provides direction and vision for the successful deployment and integration of emerging web and media technologies online and in the classroom, driven by pedagogical best practices. The Director will provide support for digital media and distance education initiatives, including but not limited to UCLAxOpen and UCLAxOnline.

The director oversees a staff of instructional designers, instructional technologists, and learning support specialists. The incumbent of this position will lead transformative projects using information technology and data-driven industry research to facilitate accepted standards for effective pedagogy and encourage academic success.

Major responsibilities include: effectively and efficiently leading and managing IDLI's staff to deliver world-class service to instructors through collaboratively developed academic and technology training solutions; collaboratively developing ideas on the effective use of technology for teaching, learning, and research; nurturing departmental projects from ideation to deployment; and developing and maintaining IDLI staff's knowledge of innovative teaching and learning strategies and technologies, such as UCLA Extension's learning management system (LMS) Canvas, pedagogically effective third-party applications that integrate with the LMS, multimedia technologies for video, audio, and immersive learning, student response systems, and e-portfolio software for instructors and students.

The Director of IDLI must work in a collaborative, collegial, and courteous manner with the leadership, staff, and instructors of UCLA Extension, and UCLA departments outside of Extension. The Director of IDLI will actively collaborate with UCLA Extension academic departments and other academic areas of UCLA to identify, develop, and promote effective uses of learning technologies.
