Departmental Overview

The Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) is a dynamic, innovative new structure at UC Berkeley that represents a once- in-a-generation transformation. The Division brings together faculty, researchers, and students from computing, statistics, the humanities, and social and natural sciences, mirroring the cross-cutting nature of data science and redefining the research university for the digital age. Core to the Division is a commitment to examining how the digital revolution affects equity and opportunity—and building the capacity to respond to these challenges. CDSS connects the Data Science Education Program, School of Information, Departments of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences and Statistics, the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, Center for Computational Biology, and the Data Science Commons. The Division is responsible for growing Berkeley's broad-based data science education program, including classes and programs serving thousands of undergraduate students a year.

This position serves as the inaugural Director of External Relations for the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) and will be responsible for establishing and developing industry partnerships, identifying funding opportunities with various public and private contract and grant agencies, and, through this work, developing and growing career services and internship opportunities for our students and alumni. In order to achieve the financial goals of the division, this position will establish, from the ground up, an organization focused on representing CDSS and strengthening CDSS' positioning on the state, local, national, and global levels, primarily with external agencies and groups in industry. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for establishing and building an active and committed alumni network. In partnership with CDSS's Chief Development Officer, the incumbent will be responsible for securing external financial support to sustain the division's growth and development and to manage relationships with our donors. The incumbent will work with industry partners and granting agencies, campus government relations, and alumni in support of the priorities of the Associate Provost and Dean (APD) for CDSS. The incumbent is a member of a collaborative senior leadership team including the APD, Associate Deans, Executive Assistant Dean (EAD), Chief Development Officer (CDO), Chief Technical Advisor (CTA), and Department Chairs. Working closely with the APD, EAD, CDO and CTA, establishes and staffs the CDSS Industry Advisory Group.

The incumbent takes leadership role in independently managing and developing a large, complex academic or research program of high visibility. Develops vision and establishes agenda to achieve research objectives. Oversees all elements of program administration. Collaborates across multiple research groups. Provides leadership in identifying outreach services. With faculty formulates program strategies and goals, directs long-term planning, and develops policies and procedures. Defines and implements publications program in support of the overall program. Is considered a subject matter expert of the organization and is recognized as an expert externally in the field.

Responsibilities

40% Works with the Associate Dean for Research, CDO and Industry Partners to lay groundwork for substantial fundraising efforts. Receives requests/recommendations for external support from APD, Associate Dean for Research, EAD, CTA, and other members of the leadership team. Researches opportunities through industry and various granting agencies to meet these objectives and presents opportunities for faculty and industry partners to collaborate on various projects. Works to identify potential resource opportunities through industry partners, sponsored projects, and nonprofit granting agencies. Writes grant proposals and once received, reviews, guides, and approves work at various stages of completion. When resources come from donors, works to build and maintain these relationships. Designs and develops major research program components and oversees execution of programs once funded.

25% Develops Alumni/ae and Industry Partner Outreach effort: Creates opportunities for alumni/ae engagement in person and online to serve as guest lecturers, give presentations, serve on committees, and serve as mentors; Promotes CDSS with alumni/ae and industry partners so they understand our goals, programs, research, and people; Establishes relationships with industry partners to develop various levels of work/commitments/etc. including mentorships, internships, joint programs and research; for example, connecting people in startup companies to our faculty and students; Collaborates with campus offices such as the Vice Chancellor for Research and Governmental Affairs Office to identify and develop relationships between CDSS and various funding agencies.

20% Program Development and Event Planning: Working with various divisional groups, including Berkeley Institute for Data Science (BIDS), Center for Long Term Cybersecurity (CLTC), West Big Data Hub (WBDH) and other similar units in CDSS, provides structure, opportunities for collaboration, and oversight to program development professionals responsible for producing a variety of educational programs for various targeted audiences, including K-12, college students, professional researchers, and the general public. Includes creating and overseeing programs designed to build a vital intellectual community of researchers through symposia, conferences, seminars, career networking, and other interactive programs. Leads various teams in brainstorming sessions.

15% Management and Supervision: Effectively manages a team of staff and contractors responsible for developing and implementing outreach efforts to current students, alumni/ae, and industry partners. Recruits, trains, supervises, evaluates, and takes disciplinary action as necessary for the team. Sets team priorities and plans workflow for team. Recommends opportunities for professional development.

Required Qualifications
  • Advanced skills in short- and long-range planning, program and project management, facilitation, and collaboration.
  • Must have advanced written, verbal, interpersonal communication and leadership skills, including attentive listening skills and the skill to effectively think quickly and respond appropriately.
  • Sound strategic thinking and consulting skills in guiding the organization toward workable strategies and solutions.
  • Expert interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results. Must be flexible and willing to work effectively in an evolving/changing/developing organizational environment.
  • Demonstrated experience fundraising and with grant proposal preparation and submission with industry, governmental, and other external partners.
  • Expert negotiation skills. Must have expert strategic planning, analytical, negotiation and political acumen skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise building collaborations between academia, industrial and / or governmental agencies.
  • Advanced skills to represent senior leaders and effectively respond to inquiries from alumni and other key constituencies.
  • Demonstrated experience with management and team building -- both internally to the organization and with external partners. Advanced ability to coach, facilitate and influence people at all levels.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced ability to build and maintain relationships with a broad and diverse range of staff, faculty, students, and members of the community.
  • Advanced knowledge of the organization's priorities, processes, protocols and procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience representing a highly technical and emerging organizations with governmental agencies, non-profits, and industry.
  • Knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Experience developing strategic plans, programs, and financial planning for an emerging organization.
  • Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) preferred.

  • The salary range designated for this position: $150,000 - $175,000; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
