Departmental Overview

The Berkeley Hope Scholars Program, as part of the Independent Student Programs subcluster within the Centers of Education Equity and Excellence provides individualized services to students who identify as current or former foster youth, former probation youth, or students who were orphaned before the age of 18. The Berkeley Hope Scholars program supports the student's transition to the university, academic achievement, retention, graduation, and advancement toward career goals. Undergraduate and graduate BHS students often lack parental connections or mentorship, often come from underrepresented, low income, first generation college student backgrounds, and may also be actively parenting. Many of these pathways and lived experiences can increase the likelihood of experiencing personal and academic challenges while completing degree programs. Services within the Berkeley Hope Scholars program include direct holistic academic counseling focused on a range of issues that includes financial aid counseling, securing year-round housing, assistance with verifying and documenting eligibility for Chaffee grant, AB12 Extended Foster Care, and social services such as Cal Fresh, affordable housing, etc. The Berkeley Hope Scholars Program works to address academic and non-academic barriers—both personal and institutional—that impact student access, inclusion, retention, and academic success.

  • Supports the Program Coordinator by providing intersectional support of former foster youth, former probation youth, and students orphaned before the age of 18 who are pursuing academic programs at Berkeley. Provides holistic academic, personal, financial, and career counseling across disciplines and colleges/schools to a cohort of at least 20 Berkeley Hope Scholars.
  • Facilitates group discussion sessions, cofacilitates academic and personal development seminars/courses, and assists with training and oversight of student staff and interns.
  • Works with campus departments, faculty, and staff advisors to resolve specific re-entry student access barriers and academic accommodation issues.
  • Other duties as assigned and participation in professional development activities.
  • Assists the Program Coordinator with both inreach and outreach activities.

Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development.
  • Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement.
  • Knowledge of trends, issues, community based organizations, social services, and governmental programs impacting child welfare system impacted students in higher education and those who may also intersect with lowincome, first-generation, underrepresented backgrounds, formerly incarcerated, military-affiliated, and parenting student communities.
  • Knowledge of and experience with analyzing problems and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of low income and historically underserved students.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.
  • Experience working with current and former foster youth, probation youth, and students orphaned prior to the age of 18, parenting students, military-affiliated students, formerly incarcerated students, and students who engage higher education later in life.
  • Experience planning, developing, and administering enrichment programs, academic and personal development seminars, courses, and workshops.
  • Knowledge of and experience with conflict management and intervention strategies.
  • Knowledge of state and county community based organizations and social services that that serve child welfare system impacted students.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of University, college, and major requirements, policies and procedures, including policies on handling student records and confidential documents.
  • Experience collaborating with child welfare workers / social workers, juvenile probation officers, community based organization education advocates, mental health providers, attorneys, and Court Appointed Special Advocates.
