The Penn Wharton Budget Model is building a world class repository for economic and public policy data. We have developed a sophisticated scraping engine that collects, standardizes, and stores data from a variety government and non-profit sources. We offer access to this data via a custom API behind and a robust user interface.
Job Description
The Penn Wharton Budget Model (PWBM) is seeking a Software Engineer to join our team. The candidate will contribute to the effort of building a world class repository for economic and public policy data and making the data readily available to the public. The candidate will work in PWBM's stack: SQL/Python/React. The candidate will work closely with PWBM's architects primarily contributing to Python development for the API. The candidate will also have opportunities to work on PWBM's UI (React).
*This position is contingent upon funding.
Qualifications
BA or MS in computer science, mathematics, engineering, or a related technical field is desired but not required; three years experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Key qualifications will be determined as part of the interview process, including demonstration of problem solving, technical knowledge and a code review. The candidate will be an enthusiastic learner, willing to take on new technical challenges. In addition to technical expertise, the candidate will be expected to work with product teams and economists as necessary to formalize and clarify requirements. Experience with DevOps is a plus, as is experience working with Python, React and databases (SQL, Postgres).
Responsibilities
- 40% - Architect, implement, and monitor full web technology stack, including data stores, middleware data models, APIs, and front end applications, all deployed to cloud resources.
- 25% - Implement and optimize economic models, with an emphasis on computationally intensive mathematical models requiring distributed execution on high performance computing rsources.
- 5% - Lead and mentor junior developers, economists, and research associates in software development work, including conducting design and code reviews.
- 15% - Build and maintain human and technical systems for collaborative development, including Agile planning, version control, testing, and deployment.
- 5% - Perform additional duties as assigned
