About the Department:

The Plants for Human Health Institute (PHHI) is one arm of an integrated research team being formed at the newly-founded North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC) in Kannapolis, NC. (http://www.ncresearchcampus.net) PHHI will integrate research in metabolomics, biochemistry, pharmacogenomics, breeding, molecular biology, postharvest attributes, and phytochemistry towards development of fruit and vegetable produce with pharmacologically-relevant levels of health-protective phytochemical complexes. The ultimate goal is to develop and characterize existing as well as new candidate crops with unique merit for human health and wellness.

Essential Job Duties:

The Research Scholar manages project staff as it pertains to the laboratory mission, advises laboratory staff on proper protocols and research direction. The position serves as lead PI on competitive proposal application and lead author on laboratory publications. The position serves as a key senior staff member in representation of the lab, operates with independence on research grant programs, and mentors graduate students and junior post-docs within the lab. Oversee budget and expenditures for all laboratory accounts.

The position has the primary responsibility for the operation and routine maintenance of Agilent LC-QTOF instrument. The incumbent is responsible for troubleshooting basic repairs, and coordinating with the manufacturer for preventative maintenance and larger repairs to keep the instrument in good working order. The incumbent will assist other users, both in-lab and outside collaborations, in LC-MS metabolite profiling experimental design, running samples, and data analysis.

The successful candidate will participate in gene function and mechanism study, performing basic plant care, genotyping and phenotyping study, generating transgenic lines, performing DNA & RNA isolation for downstream molecular biology and genomic studies, plasmid construction, generating reporter liens, high-throughput sequencing library construction, data analysis, and statistical analysis of genomic data. Growth chamber maintenance such as overseeing pesticide application for research needs for proper Arabidopsis growth is an important part of this position. The training of others to ensure compliance with the regulatory requirements is a must.

This position will be located in Kannapolis, NC.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. required in relevant field.
  • Position requires a broad, interdisciplinary knowledge base, with experience in chemistry, molecular biology, biochemistry, and plant biology.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of relevant laboratory experience and experience in training and supervising graduate and undergraduate research.
  • Experience with procurement and management of laboratory supplies as well as responsible for environmental health and safety and safety regulation compliance are required.
  • Experience in molecular biology, plant genetics, and protein biochemistry is essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Plant Biology, Biotechnology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Agriculture, or related fields and 2 plus years of relevant experience.
  • Skills In DNA and RNA extraction from plant tissues, molecular cloning, PCR setup, DNA sequencing, quantitative RT-PCR, SNP genotyping and plant tissue culture.
  • Knowledge and experience of chemical separation and analysis methodology including analytical and preparatory HPLC, mass spectrometry (LC/MS and LC/MS/MS), protein isolation, detection, and characterization.
