Essential Job Duties:

The IEP Foundation Year College Essay Coaches are responsible for meeting one-on-one, in-person with gifted Saudi students studying at NC State for the upcoming academic year. This program is administered jointly by NC State’s Global Training Initiative (GTI) and Intensive English Program (IEP). This position is housed in the IEP and will report to the IEP Director. Successful candidates will possess: excellent written English skills, knowledge of the current college admissions landscape (STEM programs preferred), strong organizational skills the ability to guide students through the unique writing process required for writing university applications 3-5 years experience in the college counseling and/or college admissions field proven ability to work with a diverse international population.
Coaches will meet, in-person at NC State’s IEP offices in Raleigh, twice weekly with 2-8 assigned members of a gifted Saudi student group on a foundation year program. The Fall 2021 semester’s writing assessments will concentrate on college application essay writing; this will be the focus for the essay coaches. This is a non-faculty, “at will”, temporary salaried appointment. This contract runs from August 1, 2021 to January 20, 2021. The tentative teaching schedule is as follows: August 9 – September 2: one 1-hour virtual session per student per week. September 15 – December 10: two 1-hour in-person sessions per student per week December 13 – January 20: one 1-hour virtual session per week, as necessary.
RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to: Coaching KAUST students in one-on-one sessions focused on writing assignments given by the English language instructor Communicating with English language instructor and coaching students on specific assignment outcomes and individual student writing challenges Meeting in person with each individual student assigned in two 1-hour sessions per week Providing extensive assistance and support on the personal statement and supplemental essays/short answers Maintaining and submitting attendance reports for coaching sessions on a weekly basis Participating in KGSP staff meetings. Option open to participate in KGSP activities both inside and outside the classroom (excursions, special classes, meals). This is unpaid time.

Close cooperation and occasional meetings with supervisor regarding instruction and student progress and well-being will be required.

Minimum Experience/Education:

Bachelor’s degree in any field plus experience working with intermediate to advanced-level students at a post-secondary level.

Department Required Skills:

Familiarity with expectations of the current college application process with a special focus on writing the college essay. Knowledge of Middle Eastern culture, interpersonal and writing skills. Finally, experience working with a diverse, multicultural student population.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education:

-Master’s degree or Certificate in TESOL -Current knowledge of issues/concerns relevant to the ESL field -International teaching experience and /or fluency in a second language are highly desired -Experience using Google for Education Apps -Extensive knowledge of English grammar and ESL writing
