The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at North Carolina State University invites qualified applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor Faculty position in the area of robotics, biosensors, and control systems engineering. Sustained population growth continues to require innovative agricultural practices including the use of affordable and efficient sensing and feedback technologies for agricultural operations. Robotics, bio-sensing, control and network technology in agricultural operations have grown rapidly in the last 20 years and are expected to remain among the major drivers of productivity. This is particularly true in high value crops and organic systems where hand labor is often the largest cost driver. This new position will develop an innovative research, extension, and teaching program centered on the development of biosensors and control systems for various applications in agriculture including detecting and quantifying microbial and chemical contaminants in food and water, livestock monitoring, crop/plant monitoring, cultivation and the control of harvesting and handling. Other Responsibilities:
Potential research areas are numerous for this position; examples include, but not limited to wireless sensors and sensor networks and controls for food packaging and inspection, environmental monitoring, precision irrigation, variable rate application of water, pesticides and nutrients, pest and disease detection in crops, machine and process control, facility automation, traceability, and precision livestock farming (PLF) (e.g., animal identification and health monitoring). It is anticipated that candidates for this position will be experts in sensors, networks, and bio-imaging. Additionally, they should have experience with various controls including PLC’s and embedded controllers. The position will allow for more collaborative linkages with almost every department in CALS, the College of Engineering (COE), and numerous other departments on campus as well as outside stakeholder groups. The position will also play an integral role in the new Plant Sciences Initiative (PSI). The research will be applied to extension programs that will benefit and promote the agricultural and food-processing industry in North Carolina, will help insure a safer food supply and lead to a greater promotion of public health through these efforts.
The successful applicant should interface with research and extension faculty in the Departments of Crop and Soil Science, Horticultural Science, Animal Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and/or Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, among others. Applicants should demonstrate effective teaching capability to address the department’s emphasis in multiple concentration areas such as machine systems and precision agriculture, bio-processing, post harvest engineering, ecological engineering, and environmental engineering. The candidate will teach an upper-level undergraduate and graduate level course on sensors and controls.

Candidate must have PhD in Biological and Agricultural Engineering or an equivalent engineering discipline.Other Required Qualifications:

- Candidates must demonstrate competencies in oral and written communication as well as interpersonal skills.
Required License(s) or Certification(s):
- Registration and/or qualification for licensure as a professional engineer.
