Associate Director for Web Strategy and Digital Solutions

The Associate Director for Web Strategy and Digital Solutions guides strategy and leads high-level, complex projects to build and sustain Brown websites, including the University’s flagship site, Brown.edu. The Associate Director oversees the delivery of websites and digital solutions supporting institutional priorities, internal and external community engagement, and the University’s overall reputation in the higher education and global communities.

 

Reporting to the Director of Web & Digital Communication Strategy in Brown’s Office of University Communications (OUC), the Associate Director leads a team of digital strategists and web producers, and guides the development of web content strategy, site information architecture (IA) and user experience (UX) within the context of the University’s enterprise web content management systems (CMS). The Associate Director manages client expectations, serving as a key liaison with stakeholders and campus partners in the development of their websites and digital solutions. Blending analytics, user insight and UX best practices, this position leads web and digital projects from conception through launch to deliver dynamic digital experiences for the University and its many constituencies.

 

In a collaborative, shared-resources structure, the Associate Director partners with members of Marketing Strategy, News & Editorial Development, Creative Services, Client Relations and a team of UX designers and front-end developers on the Web & Digital Team in the Office of University Communications to deliver web and digital solutions for University priorities and internal clients. The Associate Director participates in discovery sessions, evaluates web/digital needs and works with an integrated team to define and deliver solutions.

 

The Associate Director must be a champion for collaboration and innovation, and work with academic and administrative units to arrive at optimal websites and digital solutions. The Associate Director effectively cultivates and manages relationships with key stakeholders across campus to ensure the timely delivery of high-quality websites and digital experiences for Brown’s users.

 

The Associate Director must demonstrate management and leadership skills, and have excellent organizational, interpersonal, and verbal communication skills. The Associate Director has expertise in UX fundamentals, knowledge of web accessibility, and extensive experience with enterprise content management systems.

 

 

 

Qualifications:

 

Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent education and experience.

 

Minimum of seven years of professional experience in a range of web practice areas including general web strategy, enterprise content management, front end code development, content strategy, information architecture, UX, SEO, content development and/or analytics.

 

5+ years of experience supervising and mentoring a team.

 

Multiple years of experience overseeing complex website projects and multiple work streams with competing priorities and deadlines in a complex organization.

 

Experience in the various phases of building and launching websites including conducting discovery, auditing content, information architecture development, content planning, asset collection, QA and migration.

 

Experience using Google Analytics.

 

Experience using SEO tools such as SiteImprove and Moz.

 

Experience with online collaboration tools for team communication and project management.

 

Experience using agile development methodologies.

 

Applicable experience with the technologies used by the team, including Drupal.

 

Higher education experience a plus.

 

Functional knowledge of multiple website practice areas including digital strategy, content strategy, visual design, UX, information architecture, analytics/measurement, and federal web accessibility guidelines and compliance.

 

Excellent written and oral communication skills with a facility for communication at all organizational levels including leadership, technical and business-oriented project staff, stakeholders and users.

 

Extensive knowledge and understanding of project management and resource allocation.

 

Expert-level knowledge of Drupal and/or enterprise CMS products.

 

Strong client service skills, and ability to assess requirements, proactively problem-solve and propose action plans.

 

Knowledge of web best practices, and emerging technologies and trends.

 

Strong background knowledge of HTML, CSS and JS, including their capabilities and limitations.

 

Demonstrated ability to manage a large portfolio of projects with flexibility and attention to detail.

 

Ability to mentor team members and establish appropriate professional development plans.

 

Ability to gain the confidence of team members and university stakeholders by communicating regularly, keeping commitments, setting expectations and delivering as promised.

 

Demonstrated willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment.
