Nature of Work:

The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus, seeks a full-time (1.O FTE) Postdoctoral Fellow to carry out research in the area of retinal biology and stem cell technologies. The successful candidate will join the Retinal Development and Translational Technologies laboratory directed by Dr. Natalia Vergara. The laboratory is part of CellSight, the Ocular Stem Cell and Regeneration Program in the Department of Ophthalmology, which encompases a cross-disciplinary team of investigators working in a highly collaborative environment with the common goal of developing novel treatments for ocular diseases.

The postdoctoral fellow will lead specific research projects involving the development of innovative paradigms for the evaluation of potential therapeutic agents for retinal degenerative diseases. Research will include the development and validation of disease models using stem cell-derived retinal organoids, the study of disease mechanisms, and the development of quantitative efficacy assessment strategies for use in the validation of drug candidates.

This is an exciting new avenue of research using cutting-edge technologies. We are looking for motivated and independent scientists willing to contribute their expertise and knowledge. There is no direct patient care or contact involved in this position. Main responsibilities include developing and carrying out research projects, publishing and communicating research results, and assisting with the training and mentoring of students and technicians.

The postdoctoral fellow will report to Dr. Natalia Vergara, PhD. They will receive mentorship, direction and training in carrying out duties and responsibilities by the investigator.

Examples of Work Performed:

The responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Designing and planning research projects.
  • Performing experiments using human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) cultures, retinal organoid tissues, and other electrophysiological, molecular and cell biology techniques as needed.
  • Analyzing and interpreting research results.
  • Maintaining effective communication with the investigator and other team members
  • Keeping an organized record of research experiments and results.
  • Assisting in the training and mentoring of students and technicians.
  • Preparing manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.
  • Participating in lab meetings and attending scientific seminars and conferences.
Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $53,761 to $65,292

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications
Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a PhD/MD in a relevant science discipline
Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have the following credentials:

  • Previous experience in vision science research
  • Experience with stem cell culture techniques
  • Experience with cell, developmental, and molecular biology techniques
  • Understanding the pathophysiology of retinal degenerative diseases
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with others as part of a team.
