General Summary of Position:

The Rist Institute for Sustainability and Energy at the University of Massachusetts Lowell seeks a talented and motivated individual to develop and lead business development and partnership efforts focused on sustainability and energy. Reporting to the Executive Director of the Rist Institute for Sustainability and Energy, and through consistent engagement with the institute’s Co-Directors, the Director will create new opportunities to support campus-wide industry, government, and NGO engagement and innovation in climate change, sustainability and renewable energy.

The Director will introduce University discoveries to vibrant local, regional, national, and international partners to support unique and joint campus research, innovation and entrepreneurship activities that advance the goals of the Rist Institute. Building successful long-term relationships that support and enhance focused engagement, research, and teaching while ensuring a consistent stream of external funding are key requirements for this position.

Federal and state investment in sustainability and energy focused efforts is an important additional role. Articulating the intersection between UMass Lowell’s unique engagement, research, and teaching capabilities and government priorities complements the interaction between industry and the university. With support and guidance from the Rist Institute’s Co-Directors, the Director will focus on areas of intersection between government priorities, industry and NGO interests, and UMass Lowell’s core strengths in climate change, sustainability and renewable energy.

Upholding and enhancing the university’s various sustainability commitments and fostering engagement in the UMass Lowell campus and greater community are key components to this position.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, or related field. Masters degree is desirable
  • Minimum ten years (Bachelors) or 5 years (Masters) of experience in business development ideally in a higher education setting
  • Require strong working knowledge of business development and university, government and industry partnerships
  • Outstanding communications skills
  • The ability to pursue grants and proposal writing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, cooperatively and collaboratively and with a proven philosophy of service
  • Must be committed to professional growth

Additional Considerations:

Technology Skills Required

  • Must be proficient in technology use; database development, querying, word processing, spreadsheet development, using Microsoft Office to accomplish work related tasks as required
  • Must be capable of learning and developing data collection templates using Excel, PDF files and various business development platforms
  • Demonstrated ability to administer and monitor various awarded contracts and monitor, workers, contractors and vendors for effectiveness and thoroughness

Preferred Qualifications:

This is a Grants & Contracts (MTA/GRACE) bargaining unit position, Grade P22.

This position is contingent upon funding.
