About us:

The Department of Applied Psychology & Human Development (APHD) is a research-intensive Department, boasting some of the finest, internationally-known scholars in their fields who teach in our five graduate programs: Child Study and Education (Teacher Education program); Counselling and Clinical Psychology; Counselling Psychology; Developmental Psychology and Education; School and Clinical Child Psychology. Our programs focus on basic and applied research pertaining to children, adolescents and adults.

Your opportunity:

Under the supervision of the Departmental Business Officer and reporting to the Manager, Departmental Academic Operations and Administrative Services, the incumbent provides day- to-day financial administration of research funds, and has responsibility for processing invoices, debit memos, cash deposits and internal transactions for the departmental operating grants and faculty research grants and contracts. The Financial Assistant is also responsible for coordination/processing of expense reimbursements and travel authorizations, preparing casual employment contracts and ensuring time sheets for casuals, U-Source orders, purchase orders, and other financial duties are executed according to all relevant policies. The Financial Officer will also prepare a range of reports to assist Principal Investigators, the Business Officer, and Manager with financial planning, forecasting and reconciling month end reports.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Monitoring, recording, reconciling and/or reporting on funding accounts for grants and contracts
  • Verifying research funding proposals are complete,accurate and adhere to sponsor guidelines
  • Forecasting, planning and monitoring multiple complex budgets
  • Implementing plans and process improvements for financial administration activities.
  • Applying the University Guide to Financial Management and other applicable policies, agency and regulatory requirements
  • Generating standard financial reports
  • Identifying and resolving individual data anomalies and discrepancies
  • Verifying that provisions of applicable collective agreements and/or policies are applied.Meeting regularly with PIs to create and monitor spending plans.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Commerce or Accounting; must be in progression through a recognized accounting program (i.e. CPA) or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum three years related experience with financial analysis and reporting, preferably in a complex, fast-paced educational environment with a strong research focus.
  • Thorough understanding of accounting fundamentals.
  • Strong business acumen; demonstrated integrity and commitment to confidentiality.
  • Ability to accurately interpret and apply guidelines, procedures, and regulations in a variety of situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to document processes and procedures (i.e. procedural manuals)
  • Capacity to manage a wide variety of tasks simultaneously and to prioritize effectively under pressure.
  • Highly proficient computer skills, including: MS Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, database management, Financial Information System or similar financial software database.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and numerical competency.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to details.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to communicate complex financial procedures to a range of audiences with minimal to professional financial knowledge.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and in a team environment,demonstrating initiative.
