Your opportunity:

The Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC) is an international Public-Private-Partnership that supports the discovery of new medicines through open access research (www.thesgc.org). Led from Toronto, the SGC is supported by public and philanthropic funding agencies, and Pharmaceutical industry partners. The SGC-Toronto Laboratory within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto is offering an exciting job opportunity for a Laboratory Technician to work within a research team focused on Huntington disease.

As Laboratory Technician, you will be part of a dynamic team working within a fast-paced research centre focused on using state-of-the-art laboratory methods. As an integral member of the team, the successful candidate will apply a diverse range lab techniques. You will oversee the day to day operational needs for thelabs utilizing your strong attention to detail and communication skills.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Applying established standards when preparing routine samples using protein expression and purification techniques for experiments
  • Collecting experimental data, performing routine data entry, verifying results and passing on findings
  • Applying established standards when determining material requirements for lab set up based on timetables and requisitions information
  • Paying close attention to occupational safety precautions and following rules and procedural instructions when restocking glassware in laboratories and/or store rooms
  • Providing orientation to others on workprocedures and practices
  • Ordering supplies with approval

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
  • Minimum one year of relevant laboratory experience
  • Demonstrated experience supporting labs, including setup of equipment and constructing proof of concept experiments
  • Experience serving as a resource and providing orientation to users on work procedures and practices
  • High level of lab equipment knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations, experience applying lab safety and protocol procedures
  • Strong knowledge of protein expression and purification techniques including bacterial transformation, large-scale E. coli expression of recombinant proteins, affinity chromatography and other chromatographic methods for protein purification.
  • Strong knowledge assessing the quality and purity of recombinant protein samples including SDS-PAGE,native PAGE, mass spectrometry and analytical gel filtration.
  • Must have strong attention to detail with the ability to take direction and work independently
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Accuraterecord keeping skills with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Must work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team, have excellent time management skills, sound judgment, exemplary organizational skills, and a commitment to research
  • Must be able to lift 20lbs frequently


Assets (Nonessential):

  • Understanding of structural biology methods such as X-ray crystallography and cryoEM as well as other biophysical methods to investigate protein-protein interactions (ITC, SPR, BLI etc.)
