attorney and lecturer-in-law position with its Youth & Education Law Project (YELP). The clinical supervising attorney (CSA) will join the thriving clinical community at the Stanford Law School where, together with the clinical faculty and staff, they will represent clients and train law students at one of the country’s leading institutions for legal scholarship and education.

The Mills Legal Clinic

YELP is one of eleven clinics comprising the Mills Legal Clinic. The Stanford clinical

program is unique in that students participate in a clinic on a full-time basis; the clinic is the

only course a student takes during the term of enrollment. Students work in the clinic space each business day, and they focus exclusively and intensively on their clients, cases, and projects. This model allows for highly intentional, reflective, and iterative case work and the ability to provide deep, nuanced supervision and mentoring to students. The Mills Legal Clinic is also committed to ensuring diversity, equity, and inclusion in all of its office and practice management, advocacy, and teaching and learning efforts. The Mills Legal Clinic occupies an entire floor in an award-winning, central-campus building opened in summer 2011.

The Youth & Education Law Project

Under the direction of Professor Bill Koski, YELP aims to both provide a world-class clinical education to Stanford law students and advocate for low-income children, youth, their families, and communities to ensure that they receive an equal and excellent public education. YELP’s approach is to teach and deploy an array of advocacy strategies to achieve its goals, including direct representation of individual students, complex school reform litigation, and policy analysis and advocacy. YELP represents youth and families in all aspects of education–related matters, including direct representation of youth in special education and school discipline/school-to-prison-pipeline matters. This includes advocacy through individualized education plan meetings, negotiation and mediation, administrative hearings, and civil litigation.

To address systemic failures in the public school system, YELP works with co-counsel and community partners to use litigation and policy advocacy strategies to improve those systems. For instance, YELP has been lead counsel in a long-standing class-action that reformed the special education service delivery system in a local school district and is working to improve California’s statewide special education monitoring system, and is currently co-counsel in a pathbreaking case that aims to ensure that the U.S. Bureau of Indian Education provides adequate educational services to the children of the Havasupai Native American Tribe. Finally, YELP undertakes policy analysis and strategic consulting on behalf of community partners and engages in numerous policy, legislative, and impact projects that seek to systemically improve educational opportunities for disadvantaged students.

YELP takes an interdisciplinary approach to its work, collaborating with juvenile defense attorneys, medical and mental health professionals, and education professionals. Notably, the Mills Legal Clinic has established a Legal-Social Work Collaborative in which a Clinical Supervising Social Worker (Kathy Ho) supervises social work interns in teams with law students to ensure that our clients’ medical, mental health, and other social services needs are met.

The Clinical Staff Attorney Position and Candidate Qualifications

The CSA will supervise YELP students, lead and participate in seminar and case rounds discussions, and participate in various community collaborations. The CSA will have substantial responsibility for the representation of children and their families in special education and school discipline matters, as well as litigation of clinic cases in state and federal court and before administrative hearing tribunals. The CSA will supervise SLS students in all aspects of their clinic work, including coaching and mentoring students who have primary responsibility over their matters. Student supervision includes close review and editing of student written work and preparation of students for negotiation and oral advocacy. Mills Legal Clinic attorneys are part of the intellectual community within the clinical program and the Law School and university at large. The clinic provides resources for its lawyers to participate in continuing education and other professional development activities. Finally, the CSA will be a part of the Mills Legal Clinic’s efforts to ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion in our teaching, practice management, and advocacy work. The CSA will report to, and work in collaboration with, Professor Koski.

Well-qualified applicants for the CSA position should have:

• Significant experience in: direct representation of low-income and/or youth clients in special education, school discipline, and educational rights matters; proceedings before administrative tribunals; collaboration with community partners; policy analysis and advocacy; and state and federal civil litigation. While it is not expected that the candidate have experience in all of these areas, experience in some with an appetite to develop experience in the others is required.

• Excellent teamwork, collaboration, and teambuilding skills.

• Strong interest in and demonstrated potential for successful teaching and student supervision, including previous experience in a clinical legal setting, the direct supervision and mentoring of junior attorneys, or similar experience.

• Strong organizational / management skills, attention to detail and self-motivation, and an aptitude for law practice and clinic management.

• Admission to practice in California or eligibility and willingness to sit for the next California Bar exam

The salary is based on a formula that is competitive with similar positions.

    a list of at least three references; and

    a complete law school transcript.

    The candidate may also submit a writing sample of no longer than 15 pages.
