Educational and Experience Requirement:Associate’s degree or sixty hours of college required. No experience required. Library experience would be helpful. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
Nature & Purpose of Position:Responsible for customer service at the Library Service Desk and metadata projects in support of Special Collections & Archives.
Primary Responsibilities:Responsibilities may include but are not necessarily limited to the following: Provide Circulation and Reserves services at the Service Desk. Answer patron inquiries of a complex nature by telephone, mail, or in person. Supervises student assistants, prioritizes, delegates, and monitors work. Assists in the training of student assistants. Recommends revisions to policies and procedures as needed. Responsible for building security along with all other Access Services staff. Supports metadata projects for Special Collections & Archives. Creates metadata (descriptive and preservation) for digital objects and scanned items. Formats metadata for ingestion into preservation software. Maintains and updates files relevant to metadata projects as needed. Compiles monthly logs of statistics related to work activities as needed. Recommends revisions to policies and procedures as needed. Assists students utilizing computers. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications:Data entry experience. Knowledge of different metadata schemes and knowledge of XML is preferred. Customer service and supervisory experience would be helpful. Must have computer skills and an ability to learn new programs. Must be detail-oriented and display a willingness to work with others, as projects may be large-scale with lengthy durations. Must be able to prioritize, exercise initiative, use good judgment and work independently. Expected to resolve work problems as they arise, make independent decisions, and work on most assignments with substantial independence.
Working conditions are normally in a semi-private or general working area of the library with little or no disagreeable conditions. Must be able to carry boxes, load and push book trucks, and shelve books.
Works on a rotation schedule with other Access Services staff and is required to work assigned Saturdays. During interim between semesters, hours will vary.
Work schedules will be between the hours of 3 p.m. – Midnight (closing), Sunday through Thursday. However, work schedules may vary according to library needs and on occasion may include evening work or weekends. Training in Library and University specific software will be provided.
