Job Description
University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is currently seeking a full-time, contractual Laboratory Research Technician to join Department of Biomedical Engineering and Technology. Under direct supervision, this person will perform routine cell, molecular and genetic procedures, tissue culture and other laboratory organization and maintenance. UMB was ranked one of America's Best Large Employers by Forbes Magazine (Feb 2021). BENEFITS:This CONTRACTUAL position offers a generous benefits package that includes 10 vacation days, 11 personal and holidays, 5 sick days; comprehensive health insurance and supplemental retirement options; and limited tuition remission for employees enrolled at UMB. In the Fall of 2021, UMB will require all faculty, staff, and students to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Exemptions for medical or religious reasons will be processed through Human Resources.   ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS:1. Perform routine molecular genetic procedures such as gene cloning, gene modifications, including CRISPR mediated gene modification, PCR, restriction enzyme digestions, gel electrophoresis, blotting, and DNA extractions.

2. Prepare chemical solutions, media, reagents, stains, and buffers.

3.  Assist in conducting research on current scientific literature using computerized applications.

4. Collect, record, and enter research data.

5. Perform general housekeeping of laboratory, and operation of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, microscopes, incubators, and autoclaves.

6. Maintains chemicals and equipment inventory.

Qualifications
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in a biological or chemical science.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
General knowledge of the principles and practices of natural and/or chemical sciences; of the safe and proper handling and disposal of applicable specimens, materials and equipment. Ability to perform laboratory procedures using applicable equipment and techniques; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to use computers and related software applications; to lift, transport and deliver materials and stock laboratory supplies and goods; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.Based on the duties of this position, selected candidates are not eligible to participate in the Bargaining Unit (Union). Salary Range: Low $40,000 UMB is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
