A postdoctoral or more senior research position is available for a DOE-funded project focused on diagnostics for plasma characterization in plasma enhanced catalysis. The project is led by Dr. Ahmed Diallo at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) in collaboration with Prof. Bruce Koel at Princeton University. Research involves developing an improved understanding of low temperature and non-equilibrium plasmas in dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactors that may offer a path for finding low temperature alternative routes to replace the high temperature catalytic processes used in industrial production of chemicals and fuels utilizing unreactive molecules such as nitrogen (N2), carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4). The project brings together experts in both plasma diagnostics and catalytic reactions and materials to enable simultaneous measurements of plasma properties and reaction products. The candidate should have a Ph.D. in physics or a related field, with a strong background and training in plasma physics, plasma science and engineering, characterization of plasmas, plasma sources, and operation of atmospheric high voltage dielectric barrier discharges. The candidate should also have demonstrated experience with the design, construction, and operation of high vacuum chambers, high voltage high current circuits and networks, Langmuir probes, and optical components, stages, and beam path optimization for optical emission spectroscopy (OES), maintenance and repair of lasers, and the ability to operate and maintain advanced laboratory equipment for plasma discharges and measurement electronics. Background experience in materials science, and with MATLAB and computer assisted design (CAD), and experience with both AC and nanosecond pulsed + DC nonequilibrium plasma generation would be advantageous. A demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and to mentor graduate and undergraduate students is desired. The candidate is expected to have good management skills relevant to a multi-user environment, good communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
