The Department of Emergency Medicine, as one of the clinical departments in the Brody School of Medicine, is a significant contributor to the missions of medical education, patient care, research, and community service. The divisions and sub-specialties represented in Emergency Medicine include: Administration, Emergency Department Clinical services, EastCare Air and Ground Medical Transport, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Research, Emergency Medicine Residency Program, Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine Residency Program, Medical Toxicology, Disaster Preparedness and Domestic Violence. The faculty of the department include 50 full-time physicians, 5 part-time physicians and one Ph.D. neurophysiologist.Job Duties :
A combined staff of 34 provides clinical service, emergency medical services instruction, research, accounting, billing and reimbursement, and administrative support to Emergency Medicine’s faculty and learner groups. The department runs two residency programs; a three-year emergency medicine residency training program which has 36 resident physicians and a combined emergency medicine/internal medicine residency program with 10 resident physicians. Additionally, the department supports 2 EMS fellows and 1 simulation fellow. Emergency Medicine provides extensive educational programming to medical students and physician assistant students during clinical rotations. The Department of Emergency Medicine’s FY20 revenues totaled $23,108,238 and annual expenses were $17,481,525.
The department’s educational, clinical and research activities take place within the context of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and Vidant Medical Center (VMC), a 974-bed state-of-the-art facility, spanning from primary to tertiary care. VMC, a level-one trauma center, represents the primary hospital for the citizens of two counties and serves as the only tertiary care facility for the 1.2 million residents of the eastern third of the state. Emergency clinical services are provided within the Emergency Department (ED). VMC Main ED and Pediatric ED combined patient visits totaled approximately 100,000 over the past year making this Department of Emergency Medicine the busiest within the region. The department also operates the only toxicology service east of Durham, providing in-patient consultations within VMC. Emergency Medicine occupies physical space in VMC (offices, Emergency Department), Brody Health Sciences Building (research laboratory), Physician’s Quadrangle Building M Annex, and EastCare Operations Center.
The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine Residency Program Directors, 2 Assistant Program Directors, the Chair of Emergency Medicine, Residency Program Coordinator, and Chief Residents to develop, direct, and supervise administrative operations for graduate medical education services within the Department of Emergency Medicine. These include all aspects of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program and the Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine Residency Program. This position serves as a resource for Graduate Medical Education (GME) information. The Assistant Residency Program Coordinator reports directly to the Clinical Academic Department Administrator for Emergency Medicine in collaboration with the Residency Program Directors. It is the responsibility of the Assistant Coordinator to relieve the day-to-day administrative burdens of running the program from the Directors, Assistant Program Directors, and Chair. The Assistant Coordinator maintains a working knowledge of the policies, procedures and requirements as formulated by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), American Board of Emergency Medicine Medicine (ABEM), the Residency Review Committee (RRC), National Residency Match Program- Electronic Residency Application Service (NRMP-ERAS), and the institutional polices of Vidant Medical Center/Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. Minimum Education/Experience:
The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center. Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
