Primary Function:

Reporting to the Director of Scholarships and Financial Advising, a Financial Advisor provides a high level of customer service to students and family members. A Financial Advisor will serve as the primary resource regarding all aspects of planning for educational expenses. A financial advisor will ensure that students are provided information and accessibility to university resources and programs that will assist them in being successful during their college education/experience and will work closely with academic and career advisors.

FAs need to be or become proficient in the NIU student system, Navigate, MyScholarships, OnBase, and other relevant software programs. Additionally, FA’s must have fundamental knowledge of federal, state, and institutional financial aid policies and procedures. FAs must have excellent communication skills and must be able to explain complex concepts in a concise and friendly manner, in both group and individual settings.

Based on staffing needs, duties may be adjusted to assist with Financial Aid and Scholarship or Bursar Office outreach activities. Additionally, a Financial Advisor may be asked to participate in recruitment events and orientation sessions or to partner with Academic Advising or Career Services on recruitment and retention initiatives. The FA position may require some evening and weekend hours. FAs may be required to work in excess of 37 1/2 hours per week during peak periods.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally):

The primary duties of the position include: educate and advise students and family members regarding financial aid options, policies, procedures as well as information related to the financial aid awarding process and student account management; promote financial literacy through individual meetings with students or group presentations; assist students in developing financial action plans that encourage retention and on-time graduation.

Minimum Required Qualifications for this position:

1. Bachelors degree required.
2. One (1) year (12 months) of experience in working with student employment, student financial aid/loans, student admissions/recruitment, scholarship/grant programs or other closely related work experience required


Education and Experience Preferred:

Master’s degree preferred
Fluent in Spanish preferred

1. Knowledge of customer service (the principles and processes for providing customer and personal services; customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for service, and evaluation of customer satisfaction)2. Knowledge of financial aid programs, the student application and registration processes, and of university academic requirements and parameters3. A working knowledge of office technology (word, excel, and necessary databases)4. Critical thinking, judgment and decision making skills – consider the costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one5. Active listening skills -giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.6. Ability to establish effective working relationships with students, family members, faculty, and staff.7. Excellent written and oral communication skills, both in individual and group settings. Strong presentation skills.8. Cultural awareness and sensitivity.

M-F, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
