Position Description Summary:

The Department of Counseling and Higher Education at Northern Illinois University seeks to hire an assistant or associate professor with expertise in higher education. The successful candidate will have a record of scholarship, teaching, and service in higher education.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will contribute in the areas of scholarly productivity; grant procurement; graduate student mentorship; thesis/dissertation direction; university, college, and departmental committee service; and the establishment of partnerships with professional organizations within both the Illinois region and nationally. Participate in student recruitment and retention initiatives, develop innovative department/college curricular and programmatic initiatives. The qualified candidate is expected to teach graduate courses at the DeKalb and Naperville campuses and online.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum Required Qualifications:

1. An earned doctorate from an accredited university in higher education or a closely related field;
2. Academic experience to commensurate with the rank of associate or assistant professor;
3. A record of published research, grants, and conference presentations in higher education;
4. Evidence of successful professional experience as a practitioner or educator in higher education administration, student affairs, or community college administration;
5. Demonstrated record of equity-minded pedagogical practices and ability to work effectively with historically underrepresented and marginalized students;
6. Experience using a variety of instructional technology in teaching and delivery methods.

Additional Requirement:
1. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Expertise in the areas of leadership, organizational change, minority-serving institutions, social justice, and/or student success for historically underrepresented and marginalized student populations;
2. Experience teaching, mentoring, and advising graduate students;
3. Teaching and scholarly record in the areas of assessment, evaluation, and/or quantitative research methods;
4. Evidence of experience in mentoring and advising graduate students and serving as a dissertation chair;
5. Five years+ of practitioner’s experience in higher education administration;
6. Leadership in state, regional, national, or international professional associations.

Northern Illinois University is a comprehensive research university offering programs from the baccalaureate through the doctorate.
