Departmental Overview

The Network for Neutrinos, Nuclear Astrophysics, and Symmetries (N3AS) is a multi-institutional collaboration dedicated to advancing research and to training postdoctoral researchers. The collaboration was initially established in September 2016 as a Research Hub in multi-messenger astrophysics, with funding from the National Science Foundation and the Heising-Simons Foundation. In September 2020 N3AS began a new era as a NSF Physics Frontier Center. N3AS, a consortium of 13 US institutions and two international partners, develops the theory tools for interpreting observations from a new generation of astrophysical facilities. These facilities are probing some of Nature's most extreme environments - the Big Bang, supernovae, and merging neutron stars and black holes -- thereby testing our understanding of fundamental physics in regimes not accessible on earth.

A new physical center for N3AS within the Physics Department is under construction, with an expected completion date of late 2021. The Center will house N3AS's Berkeley activities as well as those of its French and Japanese international partners. N3AS will sponsor a variety of activities benefiting the broader astrophysics community, including workshops, an annual summer school for advanced graduate students and beginning postdocs, and student exchanges with European Training Networks. N3AS members also work with undergraduates interested in astrophysics research, with particular emphasis on providing transfer students with research opportunities.

Berkeley's Physics Department is ranked among the top few in various national and international assessments. The Department includes approximately 62 active faculty, 35 emeritus faculty, 41 staff members, 280 graduate students, and 300 declared undergraduate majors.

  • Develops outreach materials, strategic communication plans, and progress reports working closely with other administrators to compile and distribute publicity documents and reports, and archiving for general public use presentations from N3AS workshops and schools.
  • Supports N3AS mission to help young researchers develop professionally, including improving retention of transfer and four-year students in the physics major; creating a summer transfer bridge program and potentially supporting Physics Department efforts to establish a new Research Experiences for Undergraduates summer program; supporting the N3AS summer school for advanced graduate students and encouraging graduate student participation in other N3AS programs; and helping N3AS Fellows develop by supporting their training as researchers and teachers, and their involvement in programs to create a more diverse field.
  • Proposes, leads and participates in policy and planning committees and working groups.
  • Provides strategy development for outreach initiatives.
  • Conducts post- implementation analysis to determine the need for further enhancements.
  • Coordinates efforts with N3AS international partners, including facilitating joint workshops and activities, and helping with the orientation of short term visitors and internally sponsored postdoctoral fellows.
