Departmental Overview
The Re-entry Student Program (RSP), as part of the Independent Student Programs subcluster within the Centers for Educational Equity and Excellence provides individualized services for students who come to the university later in life and supports their transition to the university, academic achievement, retention, graduation, and advancement toward career goals. Undergraduate and graduate re-entry students often come from underrepresented, low income, first generation college student backgrounds, and may also be actively parenting and bring lived experience navigating the foster system. Many of these pathways and lived experiences can increase the likelihood of experiencing personal and academic challenges while completing degree programs. Services within the Re-entry Student Program include direct holistic academic counseling focused on a range of issues that includes financial aid counseling, assistance with verifying and documenting eligibility for social services such as Cal Fresh, affordable housing, etc. The Re-entry Student Program works to address academic and non-academic barriers--both personal and institutional--that impact student access, inclusion, retention, and academic success.
Responsibilities
- Provides holistic academic, personal, financial, and career counseling across disciplines and colleges/schools to re-entry students (e.g., those with disabilities, parents, low-income, first generation college, former foster youth, formerly incarcerated, and other underrepresented populations, etc.) who regularly access higher education later in life.
- Supports the Program Coordinator with oversight of the RSP space and daily operations including drop-in advising, coordination of the front desk (physical and virtual), and peer advising appointments. Assists in the supervision and training of student staff. Supports with marketing and promotion of program activities, including scholarships, course offerings, workshops and events via social media, website, and RSP e-mail.
- Facilitates group discussion sessions, cofacilitates academic and personal development seminars/courses.
- Works with campus departments, faculty, and staff advisors to resolve specific re-entry student access barriers and academic accommodation issues.
- Other duties as assigned and participate in professional development activities.
- Assists the Program Coordinator with both inreach and outreach activities.
Required Qualifications
- Knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development.
- Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement.
- Knowledge of trends and issues facing re-entry students in higher education, particularly from low-income, first generation, underrepresented backgrounds, former foster youth, former probation youth, students who were orphaned before the age of 18, formerly incarcerated, military-affiliated, and parenting students.
- Knowledge of and experience with analyzing problems and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of low income and underrepresented re-entry students.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.
- Experience working with re-entry students, parenting students, military-affiliated students, formerly incarcerated students, former foster youth, former probation youth, and students orphaned before the age of 18 who access higher education later in life.
- Experience planning, developing, and administering enrichment programs, academic and personal development seminars, courses, and workshops.
- Knowledge of and experience with conflict management and intervention strategies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of University, college, and major requirements, policies and procedures, including policies on handling student records and confidential documents.
