General Description:

This position assists the Stage Manager with coordinating the preparation, set-up and operation of stage facilities to include stage carpentry, rigging, lighting and sound systems in the OCCC Bruce Owen Theater (BOT) and Visual and Performing Arts Center Theater (VPACT).

Minimum Education/Experience:

Three years work experience as a stagehand in a multi-use venue of no less than 750 seats.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of technical staging systems.

Ability to operate stage systems.

Ability to and skill in coordinating stage needs for events.

Ability to make independent judgments.

Ability to supervise.

Ability to think logically.

Ability to be creative.

Ability to and skill in maintaining stage equipment.

Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.

Ability to relate to others with tact and diplomacy.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Word, Excel and Visio or similar software

Working knowledge of design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Vectorworks or similar software)

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:

Strength enough to lift, push, pull or carry objects weighting up to 60 pounds.

Near vision enough to read and draft documents such as written communications, forms, reports, etc.

Flexibility enough to bend, twist, and reach out when performing repair tasks.

Speech and hearing enough to communicate in person by two-way radio and by telephone.

Balance enough to work on equipment while standing on a ladder.

Manual dexterity enough to operate keyboards and manipulate machine controls

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree

3-5 years experience as a stage carpenter

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement):

Assist the Stage Manager in performing the following functions:

Administration:

Perform tasks before, during, and after events in support of the administrative needs of the department. Examples of typical tasks are:

-Order parts and materials for stage by submitting written request to supervisor.

-Write/Fill-in log detailing parts and equipment needs for stage to maintain permanent records of events requirements.

-Prepare/Write report on operation of stage and equipment and submits to supervisor.

-Conduct annual inventory of stage equipment by examining and listing stage parts and equipment. Note condition, safety, and serviceability.

-Coordinate storage of supplies and equipment for events by discussing space available, costs, and storage with parties concerned.

Carpentry:

-Supervise, operate and maintain theatrical staging systems and components, i.e., microprocessor-based control systems, electronic control and processing equipment,theatrical rigging systems, and equipment common to large theatrical complexes.

Public Relations:

-Exchange information with a variety of individuals in preparation for and in staging events. Examples of typical tasks are:

-Collaborate with outside event promoters to explain and discuss stage facilities, equipment, and setup necessary for event.

-Collaborate with maintenance supervisor, outside agencies, College departments, and local theatrical union employees in order to plan for staging of event.

Events Planning and Coordination:

-Performs tasks related to preparation for staging events. Examples of typical tasks are:

-Supervise setup of stage sets by directing activities of workers including theatrical union employees.

-Coordinate timing of stage events with stage technicians by discussing and demonstrating methods for operation of equipment to be utilized during event/show.

-Plan stage and prop construction by examining and discussing sketches with maintenance supervisor, carpenters, electricians, outside agencies, and local theatrical union employees.

-Design stage sets by arranging props and stage equipment using knowledge of event needs and information obtained from promoter and Cultural Programs Director.

Technical Equipment Operation and Maintenance:

-Operate, set up, test and perform maintenance on stage sound, lighting, and supportive equipment. Examples of typical tasks are:

-Inspect stage and technical equipment for wear and safety and notes problems in log.

-Replace/repair electrical bulbs, fuses, external wiring, and other small stage and lighting devices by using small hand tools.

-Collaborate with local firms to discuss bids on maintenance or repair of major stage equipment such as cleaning drapes and curtains, stage flooring, stage rigging, and sound systems.

Supervision:

-Supervise stage technician(s) by delegating and prioritizing work assignments.

-Supervise stage technician(s) in operating house lights during events by observing work in progress.

-Provide assistance when necessary to stage technician(s) in operating light control board and sound system.

-May provide direction to non-College union employees by assigning work and observing work in progress.

-Communicate with stage technicians to clarify assignments or to assist and advise when problems occur.

Contribute to a safe educational & working environment.

Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.

Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC’s established safety and health procedures and practices.

Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation and shelter in place drills and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.
