Position SummaryUniversity Information Systems (UIS) provides technical services and enterprise applications to the University of Colorado’s (CU) four campuses and the Office of the President. UIS is committed to excellence in customer service, technical expertise, and the development of enterprise applications responsible for supporting CU’s students, faculty, human resources employees, finance employees, and others.

The Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst/Developer is a member of the Data and Business Intelligence team, which exists to support and enhance the University's reporting and analytics capabilities. CU currently maintains reporting systems, Cognos and Tableau, that are used to develop reporting options for business offices and campus users. The BI Analyst/Developer is a customer-centric position focused on maintaining a solid BI architecture tool and providing customer guidance on BI best practices and ongoing end-user support. This position collaborates with and advises report developers, communicates enhancement roll outs, promotes end-user adoption, and ensures the continued successes of reporting deliverables.

In addition to the required duties above, the BI Analyst/Developer also has the option to support the University’s data warehouse, data integrations, analytics, and business intelligence initiatives by acting as a member of the University’s extract, transform, and load (ETL) team. In this optional role, the position serves as an ETL developer and systems tester along with other ETL-related tasks.

This position reports to the Assistant Director of Data and Business Intelligence and is exempt from the State of Colorado Classified Staff System.

Duties and Responsibilities: Duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: 

BI Systems and Tools Administration and Support

  • Provides front-line support of enterprise reporting and BI tools 
  • Performs technical analysis and troubleshoots system problems
  • Utilizes best practices to assist with BI strategic vision and subsequent implementation of strategic initiatives
  • Collaborates with report developers and department decision makers to encourage tool adoption
  • Facilitates classroom and Zoom BI tool training sessions and provides ongoing mentoring to end users throughout the CU System
  • Provides content for the Data and Business Intelligence team’s web site, blog, and training efforts
  • Collaborates with campus developers to migrate all reports and dashboards through systems development life cycle (SDLC) environments, quality assurance (QA), and production
  • Partners with specific campus functional units, as assigned, as a primary Data and BI contact to review status of existing requests, capture upcoming needs, and facilitate any questions or concerns to resolution
  • Continuously participates in educational and professional development activities, such as attending trainings and conferences and completing self-directed learning
Business Intelligence Analysis/Development and Testing

  • Provides guidance and oversight of analytical reporting and delivery of dashboards to campus and System customers
  • Collaborates with end users and developers to determine business requirements for reports, dashboards and ETL enhancements
  • Communicates requirements to ETL developers and assists end users with User Acceptance Testing (UAT) needs
  • Participates in the implementation of end-to-end BI solutions
  • Develops complex analytical Cognos or Tableau reports and/or dashboards generation for the UIS department and/or other campus departments as needed
  • Utilizes best practices to review existing reports, recommend performance improvements, and advise on the best visual representation of analytics
  • Analyzes data to help campus customers identify new BI trends
  • Performs report and dashboard systems testing for objects developed by the team
  • Conducts thorough data analysis efforts to provide guidance and input towards enhancements and report development design
Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) Development and Testing (Optional)

  • Assesses and gathers requirements from a business and data warehouse architecture perspective
  • Analyzes data in order to create technical design and complete simple data modeling efforts
  • Extract data from complex disparate system data base sources for ETL job generation within IBM DataStage and automation
  • Performs both unit and system testing to ensure the code meets the functional and technical requirements
  • Participates in production support on-call weekly rotations
  • Updates documentation such as source to target mappings, technical specification, system test scorecards, deployment checklists and change management tickets

System Administration, which also houses the Office of the President, is located in the uptown neighborhood of Denver with a few smaller offices located on the campuses.  However, this position has the ability to work 100% remote.  Many of our departments support the educational and research missions of the four University of Colorado campuses, but System Administration is not considered a campus. What we offer:

Salary: The anticipated hiring salary range has been established at $75,500 - $84,000.

The market salary range for this position is $75,500 - $103,900.

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or anticipated hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:To be successful in this position, candidates will need the following:

  • Knowledge of data warehouse concepts and best practices
  • Knowledge of SQL and Relations Database Management Systems
  • Knowledge of Kimball methodologies, including star schema design and accumulating and periodic snapshots
  • Knowledge of SDLC best practices as they relate to data warehousing and BI
  • Oral, written, and listening communication skills, including the ability to accurately interpret what others are communicating and convey messages, information, concepts, and details clearly
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to analyze data and trends in order to produce results
  • Strong performance tuning skills related to Oracle, Tableau, and Cognos 
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple concurrent and competing tasks and responsibilities, and adapt to changing priorities while maintaining personal effectiveness

Additional skills that are preferred but not required:

  • Knowledge of ETL architecture
  • Knowledge of database design and data modeling
  • Knowledge of IBM DataStage


Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education, or equivalent professional experience (professional experience may be substituted for the degree on a year-for-year basis)
  • Three (3) years’ business intelligence experience, which includes:
    • Developing reports and dashboards using SQL
    • Advising customers on analytical reporting methodologies, requirements, and best practices
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education in information technology, computer science, computer engineering, information systems, or related IT field
  • Five (5) years’ business intelligence experience, which may include:
    • Three (3) years of advance SQL experience, and/or
    • Three (3) years of professional experience working directly with customers advising them on requirements, providing guidance on analytical reporting methodologies, and best practices, and/or
    • One (1) year experience working with IBM DataStorage, Kimball methodologies, including star schema design, and accumulating and periodic snapshots, and SDLC best practices as they relate to data warehousing and BI 
    • Professional experience developing reports using Cognos,  MicroStrategy, Tableau, or other report tools to build complex, robust reports, OLAP cubes and dashboards
  • Reporting experience in a higher education setting
  • Visual arts training or degree
  • Experience reporting on data warehouse data and/or exposure to star-schema design
  • Experience facilitating large BI tool training sessions
