Graphic Designer - Tickle College of Engineering

The Office of Engineering Communications within the Tickle College of Engineering seeks to hire a graphic designer to set and maintain the visual tone and presence of the college within the UT brand. The designer will work closely and collaboratively with team members and clients to support the mission of the college and the university.

Communications & Marketing Professional 1

Responsibilities:

  • Acts as lead designer and works alongside project team members to develop concepts and appropriate communication vehicles for the client. These projects may range from small-scale items such as posters or invitations, to larger scale, high-profile, complex projects like magazines, or full communication campaigns involving multiple designed pieces delivered across a full suite of media including print, electronic, and video.
  • Creates designs that possess a strong sense of composition, typography, and color and work within the existing brand guidelines.
  • Assembles visual prototypes or “comps” when needed.
  • Creates templates for clients in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and other software programs such as Adobe InDesign.
  • Works with hired freelancers such as photographers and illustrators to make decisions about visuals for high-impact printed and digital pieces such as magazines and campaigns.
  • Arranges and directs photo shoots.
  • Collaborates with team members to ensure design consistency across various media, especially during campaigns.
  • Handles office or project administrative tasks, includes emailing, project data entry, logging time per project, and attending staff and project planning meetings.
  • Liaises via email or in person with clients about projects.
  • Works with printers and promotional item vendors to package pieces for print, obtain estimates for printing items, fills out Publication Authorization Number request forms, and liaises with printer and vendor regarding deadlines and delivery of printed items.
  • Provides quality assurance by proofreading, approving printer’s proofs and attending press checks.
  • Keeps apprised of design trends and methodologies.
  • Makes design format decisions that work within project budgets and align with marketing plans.
  • Helps develop the office’s creative culture and upholds the quality standards.
  • Works with management to conceptualize and set standards for the public representation of the college.
  • Meets with clients and internal teams to access communication needs and goals and develop strategies for achieving those goals.
  • Presents design concepts and strategic direction to clients and fellow team members


Qualifications
Minimum Requirements (Education and Experience):

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (or equivalent combination of education, training and experience).
  • Strong proficiency in industry standard design software (Adobe suite).
  • Proficiency in industry standard office suite software (Word and Excel).
  • Familiarity with working within brand guidelines and requirements.
  • Solid knowledge of printing processes and techniques.
  • Ability to manage and deliver multiple projects with rolling deadlines, shifting from project to project as needed, working and thinking proactively, and prioritizing tasks appropriately.
  • Ability to problem solve and analyze complex problems.
  • Ability to presents concepts, designs, and/or rationale to clients or team members in a clear, confident manner.
  • Ability to plan ahead and develop creative strategies.
  • Ability to produces large volume of work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to manage projects through the approvals and editing process.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with team members to provide recommendations to assistant director and director.
  • Ability to motivate peers and lead individuals who are not direct reports.
  • Ability to maximize workflow efficiencies.
  • Basic knowledge of designing for web accessibility standards or ability and interest to learn how to do so.  
  • Ability to interact with and collaborate with all team members and clients in a respectful and sensitive manner.
  • Ability to learn new skills and technologies as needed.
Preferred Abilities and Experience:

  • Expert level skills with industry standard design software.
  • Advanced knowledge of printing processes and techniques.
  • Solid knowledge of best practices for design and accessibility in electronic media.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
