Veterinary Assistant I, Large Animal Clinical Sciences

Regular, Full-time - MR02

The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for a vacant Veterinary Assistant I position located in the Large Animal Clinical Sciences Department. The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of basic functions within the Equine Hospital such as general care, feeding, cleaning, and exercising of equine patients. Cleans and disinfects equipment, animal stalls and treatment areas.  Records daily observations.  Assists with admittance and discharge of patients.  Provides assistance with animal handling.

Typical Responsibilities:

Provides basic assistance to veterinary technicians, clinicians, and students. Feeds equine patients and offers water. Records observations. Assists clinicians with underwater treadmill treatment of horses by operating the treadmill and hot-walker. Handles, jogs to check for lameness, and lounges horses for exams. Clips, scrubs, and preps horses for injections. Prepares exam rooms with proper equipment for appointments. Assists with loading and unloading horses. Assists with admittance and discharge of patients.

Disinfects Equine Performance and Rehabilitation Center (EPRC) by cleaning stalls, sweeping hallways and exam rooms, washing and scrubbing hallways and exam rooms at the end of the day, and keeps loading area organized and clean.  Maintains clean and level footing on the horse hot-walker.  Maintains underwater treadmill.  Levels and maintains riding/lameness exam arena. Cleans all equipment. Performs laundry pickup and drop off.  Prepares grain bags for the weekend's in-house horses. Orders and restocks supplies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:

General knowledge of animal behavior.  General knowledge of housekeeping to include cleaning and disinfection.  Knowledge of safety procedures.  Good verbal and written communication skills.  Ability to restrain animals.  Ability to maintain confidentiality.  Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.  Ability to stand for long periods of time. Ability to run along-side horses.



Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent.  This is an entry-level position. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must have a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

One year of experience working with horses and other large animals.
